While the author appears to correctly identify our current strategy as well as recruitment failures of late, he doesn't seem to show as much familiarity with some of our people as one would expect. Maybe early and perhaps bound by confidentiality, but one would expect to hear more on players/recruits. Maybe minor and insignificant but should know the name is Gaskins and, while not a true point, recognize based on history and design that Fields is at least being penciled in as a combo guard. And while maybe a bit delicate, but as a blogger would expect he would add more light on our 13th ship and who will be missing.
Maybe we need an overbearing mom such as the new mouth of Siena basketball who gives all the skinny on Saint recruits and will become a handful for the equally-opinionated and egocentric, Jimmy Patsos.

The article is fair and objective, IMO. It does read as a checklist-type summary, sans much insight. My guess is that will occur after JC has had a chance to observe the newbies work out. Dominique and Rolle should be a lock at the 4 and 5 spots, with Welton and Elias as their backups. Looks like Gaskins and Burke compete for major minutes at the 3 spot, when JD chooses not to play 3 guards, which I suspect he will do quite a lot, as MD and Rolle alone may give us adequate board play and Desi and Adams appear to be our major scoring options. Washington, Wyche, Adams and Fields look like the 1/2 spot rotation players. Based on limited first hand observation and A/TO stats, Fields does look like more of a combo than point, but the position is being upgraded in a major way! Major talent upgrade, on paper. Paradigm upgrade of scoring ability. If we stay healthy, a "Canisius" type turnaround is not out of the question.

Barring major improvement or a plague of injuries, hard to see much time for Chazz this season. May be a late game defensive specialist at the guard spot?
Tucker may surprise and hold off Elias and Welton at the backup 4/5 spot, who knows?

johngalt, you are right on the money on every point. Also, 14 names - only can have 13 palyers, so who is out? Gaskins, Hawkins....?? Gaskins never mentioned in recruitrecon.com ? Perhaps Hawkins will have to sit out, like Tucker did. Maybe someone else, Sellars? or....? Too much speculation, just guessing. However, article said nothing that we don't already know. I wouldn't count Patterson out though; we will see. Seems like a well rounded bunch to complete for playing time. Tucker too small (6-4) for center rotation; if have to, can rotate Dominique at times. Just my opinion.

As matters now stand, expect Hawkins in school come September.

As matters now stand, expect Hawkins in school come September. I think it is funny. We all would expect him to be in school if he qualifies or does not qualify. The real question will be is he playing this season. I have now heard it both ways, all in a period of a month.

Would not put much value in the "current" accuracy of recruitrecon. While changes are indeed possible over the next four months, there is a good probability all 14 will be in school. Biggest concern might be trying to find playing time for the five new upperclassmen arriving. As JCHoops pointed out, several are similar by position, and will not be content dealing with bench time over their final two years. Nonetheless, the competition for playing time should be a welcomed attraction. Here's hoping this is the biggest challenge one will be facing before the new season arrives.

Thought the most accurate observation by JC hoops is that "Summer Ball" is where players develop most. JD and staff have been doing individual (2/3 players at a time) workouts and drills for well over a month as sanctioned by the NCAA. Will begin again in the Fall. Once the Season starts "development" takes a back seat to playing.
Regarding the Team makeup, Hawkins is expected to be in school but sitting a year as a non-qualifier. Not positive but pretty certain on this. Word is that he is a teriffic talent.
Wouldn't dismiss Chazz Patterson, unless redshirted. Funny how the newbeees always get the benefit of the doubt, sight unseen. Chazz is quite a player and, I think, will hold his own against any of those we have not seen. Remember he was only a Freshman. Don't count him out. Chazz is a player and undoubtedly is the best defender we have.
Competition for playing time is good. Hope the guys push each other.

Will be interesting to see how it all plays out. Pretty easy to pick the starting five, but after that, it gets a lot harder on who gets playing time. Excited about all of the newbees, but players like Burke, Peterson and Tucker cannot be minimized, especially if they've improved their game. Nice to have the problem of getting minutes for all the players. Can see us having a 10 man rotation.

Admittedly early but even when we get closer to full practice, only two spots seem certain. Desi at the 2 and Dominique at one of the front positions. Look for a battle at the wing 3 among Adams, Burke, and maybe even Gaskins. Rolle, Desport, Tucker and Welton will be in the mix and compete for time at the remaining "big" position.
After examining this attempt to define, it becomes even more apparent that clear lines between player and position remain obscure, with time and role a function of blend and team chemestry. As O/T correctly points out, player growth and development occur in the off season and we are sometimes remiss in giving benefit to newbies while overlooking development of a versatile athlete such as Patterson.

Based on clippings and hearsay I'm looking for Adams, Rolle and Wyche to round out the starting five. Maybe Fields at the point until Wyche gets his feet wet.

I heard Hawkins will enroll and sit out as a non qualifier as well.I suspect they will ask someone to redshirt for class balance purposes, i would guess Patterson as well since he's very young entered school as a 17 year old and could use a year in the weight room.

Chazz would likely see very little time behind our "wing" players Adams, Burke, Gaskins, etc. Fields looks like the backup PG, by default (assuming my assessment of Wyche starting sooner rather than later is accurate). No apparent room at the inn next season. Even if Chazz ability were equal to Adams, Burke and Gaskins, this move makes perfect sense from a class balance perspective. I do think Chazz can become a decent MAAC offensive player and a "lockdown" defensive guard, in due time.
