In the footsteps of another Baltimore forward named Melo.........
After leaving Lake Clifton last spring, Hawkins joined Under Armour B’more’s Finest. Brian Scott, the AAU program’s 17-and-under coach, told Hawkins about Mt. Zion Prep, and Hawkins happily signed on for a post-grad season. “Rodney is a unique player because he’s a stretch 4, a guy who can play the 4-man and also play the wing,” said Mt. Zion coach Rodrick Harrison. “He has the ability to hit the outside shot and also get through the post to the bucket. I think he’ll be great with Saint Peter’s. He’s like a hybrid tight end in football. He’s one of those guys, a 4 that’s athletic, skilled and tough enough to play the wing. He’s a mismatch for a lot of 4-men in that [MAAC] conference.” Hawkins, who said he has achieved a qualifying SAT score, is averaging around 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Warriors, who are headed to Florida this weekend for a tournament at IMG Academy. Saint Peter’s began pursuing Hawkins early in Mt. Zion’s season. “They called and texted me every day,” Hawkins said. “I just looked into [the school] more and looked at how many [players] they had graduating this year, how many underclassmen they’re bringing in.” Hawkins said he’s looking forward to “playing out of town, playing on a bigger stage in a new environment. … [The Saint Peter’s coaches] can expect me to keep going hard, never giving up on the team and keeping the school pride.”

Looks like a very nice get on paper. No one here i think has ever questioned the work ethic of John Dunne or the assistants only the results which as we all know are caused by a number of factors many outside the staff's control.

Everyone who knows the staff personally claims they work very hard; we all agree that is true. Texting and calling every day is part of recruiting. Happy to hear it's occurring; that is what our our guys are paid to do.
What should a SPU fan reasonably expect? It may not be realistic to expect we can compete with Iona's admissions policies or Siena's resources or Fairfield's campus or academic reputation. As everyone agrees, SPU recruiting has it's challenges!
I think we'd all be satisfied (I would) if SPU's recruiting attained the results of Canisius, Niagara and Rider, all having obstacles similar to ours.
For the past five years, that has obviously not been the case. There appears to be a realistic hope this upcoming class can help dig SPU out of the MAAC recruiting basement. The pedigrees and competition level of the programs yielding Weldon, Wyche and Hawkins all look solid. Dominique is a legit D 1 front line player.
Let's all hope our next two classes bear no resemblance to our last five. On paper, that appears to be the case, giving all 15 of us reason for hope. :-)

Loyal...your last sentence says it all..."all 15 of us". You are correct. At the Fairfield game it looked as if they had more alumni/oldtimers in the stands than we did! Imagine, a recruit coming on an official visit an attending a home basketball game. We have, let's face it, the worse fan base in the league, no less the Met area. Big, Big negative in recruiting.
Certainly, Met basketball has fallen off since the glory days many, many years ago BUT go to a Manhattan home game (I was there) or an Iona home game (I was there) or a Wagner home game (I was there) a Hofstra home game (I've been there), and even an LIU home game (I met you there). Or how about the handful of us (maybe 15-25) who go to the Prudential Center for Seton Hall. Our so-called fan base is embarassing.
Let's also stop this stuff about Cansius, Niagara, and Rider. Cansius has done NOTHING in this league for years. Rider, I personally lost a top flight recruit to them. Hate to tell you his families comments on SP vs Rider as a preferred destination. And as far as the much referred to Niagara I could name several advantages ( such as a pretty good PE degree program) among other reasons for there reasonable success. And don't think for a moment that Niagara doesn't rival Iona in the athletes they recruit. Our obstacles are greater than any school I know...period.
Can it be done? Resoundly yes, but it involves many times the "hard work" of other schools AND a little bit of luck...yes luck. I, with you, hope the hard work joins with a little bit of luck to make us more than competitive in the league. I want to win, not just compete, and so does our staff.
Oh! and by the way check out the 2011 budgets posted today. Pay special attention to our RECRUITING BUDGET compared to others. Big, big disadvantage. Check out our rivals, even Cansius!!
My question as an Alum to the Administration....are you really serious about being a D1 Program?

A triple double !!!!
Austin White scored a game-high 19 points to lead St. Peter's Prep, No. 19 in The Star Ledger Top 20, to a 77-49 victory over North Bergen in the quarterfinal round of the Hudson County Tournament.
St. Peter's Prep grabbed an early lead in the first quarter when it outscored North Bergen, 21-9. Trevis Wyche recorded a triple double contributing 16 points, 10 rebounds, and 11 assists for St. Peter's Prep. Robert Deleon scored a team-high 13 points for North Bergen.

Wyche with 24 points, 10 assists, 8 rebounds in a 63-53 win over Marist.
Based on what I saw last night, JD has finally landed his elusive pure PG.
Trevis' finishes well going to the hole, which will be more difficult against bigger players........but his ability to handle and distribute is quite impressive. That part of his game should translate.
Trevis has played very well against top flight HS competition (Boyle's FL club and St. Benedicts). He goes up against a very good PG from Hudson Catholic, Robert Morris bound Kavon Stewart, Saturday night in the HCIAA Title Game.
