Loyal in response to your curiousity about any other recruited SPC receiving McDonalds all american nomination there are at least 4 from nj and 1 from ny that I know of in the last 6 years, However for the sake of of alleviating more controversy because this is a big achievement for any HIgh school player and we wouldnt want to sit around and tear down such a great accompishment, the info can be found on the internet . But I know for a fact that each lead their team to at least a State sectional title and even higher for a few I

840+ players nominated nationwide. The 22 NY Metro Players nominated constitute a pretty impressive list, so it seems like a pretty nice honor. Encouraging, objective endorsement of Welton's potential to succeed at SPU.

Marlon is on the job....
After a big few weeks including a standout performance at the SNY Invitational, you knew it was a just a matter of time until Chris Robinson picked up his first offer. Chris Robinson Even with the big games the 6'2" junior has been flying a bit under the radar for Cardinal Hayes, a team that features >Shavar Newkirkand Tyler Wilson, but on Monday a local school became the first to finally pull the trigger. "St. Peter'sjust offered on Monday," Robinson said after his team win over St. Francis Prep on Tuesday afternoon. Robinson admitted it was exciting to get the first offer and believes this could be the start of many. "You know, after you get that first one, you get three and then five so I'm happy to get the first and hope more come." The offer came from Peacocks assistant coachMarlon Guild who has shown interest in Robinson for quite a while said Hayes head coach Joe Lods. A few other schools are showing heavy interest in Robinson as well including Miami, George Mason, Fordham, Iona and Wagner according to Lods. With one offer under his belt and a few others showing strong interest, we may be hearing a lot more from Robinson on the recruiting front, but don't expect a quick decision.
"My coaches talk to me and have been telling me to weigh my options and don't rush a decision so that's what I'm going to do," Robinson said. The first offer has come, and now it's time to sit back and hopefully watch the rest of the offers start to flood in for this extremely talented junior.

Nice get and post bergenbird. Maybe this will put to rest, although I doubt it, the assertion by some that we can't identify talent and do not have good recruiters. Marlon is one of the best.
Our staff knows talent. The problem is, and always has been, getting that top tier mid-major talent to choose SP....and if the player(s) chooses to go elsewhere and we have to go with a lower level recruit, the criticism begins.
Recruiting to SP is difficult but not impossible. Sometimes hard work pays off. Hopefully with Desi and Chazz this year and Dominique, Wyche and Welton next.
Keep working at it Marlon!

Just sayin'...boy loyal you just don't give up. Yea, these guys know nothing about talent, haven't recruited or offered any high level players, don't have any contacts and RR and OD, as per my post, really wanted to come here. Guess these guys just can't recruit. Let's hire Joe Michalich, think he'd come?
As bergenbird posted "Keep working Marlon" no matter what the know it all's are saying about you.

This banter is hilarious. It's like me asking JLo to the senior prom during our freshman year. She says "It's exciting to know now that I'll be going, but I'll wait to see if the All State Quarterback asks later." Wake me up whrn an LOI is in SPU AD's office

figgy...if I read your post correctly, I agree! Reading the article on Robinson, it clearly tells me that he is flattered to be offered but would probably go with what he considers "higher level" offers and situations. I have been posting that, ad nauseum, as "our problem". Anyone who doesn't see or understand that is either blind or...
What bergenbird posted just reaffirms that this Staff is both knowledgeable in evaluating talent and pursues aggressively. Can someone else recruit better?...possibly,
What obviously bothers me is the constant criticism by those who have never recruited, attempted to recruit,or have never spoken to potential recruits, as I have, to find out why it's extremely difficult to get impact players to come to SP.
So my post was about congratulating Marlon on identifying talent and working his a** of to have that talent sign for SP. Doubt if Robinson will sign, given his comments, but hopefully all that hard work will bring results at some point. If not, hire someone else and then, I'll bet, some will begin the criticisms all over again we.
As I've posted endlessly...NOT IMPOSSIBLE to have success at SP but lots of headwinds. I admire both our staffs knowledge of what's out there and their tireless efforts. I appreciate that more than all the criticism and second guessing I see on this Board.

My point in mentioning JM is simple.
Horrible climate, minimal diversity, slightly better but nothing to write home about academically, 400 miles from anywhere......and JM consistently recruits good players to Niagara. Reasonable level of success up there during the past decade.
Easy at SPU? No way; OT is right.
On the other hand, should we 20 SPU fans meekly resign ourselves to the fact a .300 win percentage is the zenith of what can be accomplished at SPU? I think not.
We all want the next three years to be better. Time will tell.
If the next three years are an extension of .300 or .400 ball, I hope we have a new coach in the Fall of 2016. Who the heck can possibly disagree with that, sans (possibly) Mrs. Dunne?
Let's hope Dominique, Wyche, Welton, etc. yield a much better future, BUt let's not be satisfied with the status quo level of performance, which has been inadequate by every possible measure......so far.

Who among us " meekly resigns ourselves to the fact a .300 win percerntage is the zenith of what can be accomplished at SPU"? Smacks of more straw man talk. Not for me!
If we have a .300 or .400 win percentage over the next three years we WILL have a new coach. I do not want to bad mouth my school but the problem is well beyond basketball or athletics. Until that changes everything else is moot.
We have a Coach who has proven he can win (MAAC Championship) and a staff that works overtime to recruit talented players. For me, I hope that next years class plus Desi , Chris and Chazz gives us the players to compete and win .Our Coach and staff have earned that respect from me.

OT, you live in that environment.....and maybe I have a "time warp" perspective.....so you are closer and have a more informed opinion on this issue.... But, I do think SPU has as much or more going for it than the Griffs and Niagara......with Rider not that far ahead of the "Jesuit Three". I have (want) to believe proximity to Manhattan, related summer internships and excellent social opportunities would appeal to some reasonable subset of legit mid-major players. Maybe not those locally.......but a free ride to school in the shadow of NYC would appeal to some HS/JUCO players. It's a heck of a lot more appealing than matriculating in Buffalo or Niagara Falls.....at least to some....no? Anyway, we both want the best for SPU. You are more patient than I am and also personally fight the recruiting challenges you mentioned. We both hope next years haul + Desi, Chazz and Burke move SPU on up....let's embrace that common hope and move forward.

Loyal, you are right. I do have a much more informed, first hand, recruiting knowledge at SP. Not only in my sport but also in basketball, not now, but dating back to the Kennedy years. Except for a few examples of success and "catching lightning in a bottle" (see KeeKee) . SP has never been a prime destination for recruits dating back to NBA'er Henry Finkle choosing Dayton over SP. Super stars Elnardo Webster and Harry Laurie, out of Lincoln High School also choose to go elsewhere before transferring back. Also I think that Bobby Hurley might get too much criticism for not sending some of his players to us. That "story" that he had an axe to grind because he was "cut by Kennedy" is also overplayed. He was not that good and certainly not the player Bobbie Leckie was. Yes there are exceptions to the above but they are exceptions, not the rule.
Yes, I do recruit well and have taken a last place team (by a lot) in the MAAC to top tier not only in the MAAC but the East. I do know how to "sell" SP but, truth be told, I have a lot of advantages (scholarship money) that the basketball doesn't have.
I also like to think that I know good coaches and recruiters when I see them...and believe me I've seen a lot of bad ones. The plain fact is that there are many student/athletes who simply do not want to come to SP, period. IMO it's starts with reasons that have nothing to do with athletics or the basketball program. Yes, we have something to sell but even there we are at a competitive disadvantage with the Manhattan's, Fordham's, Iona's, Seton Hall's, Fairfield's and even now Wagner's of the world. All the points you mentioned are just as valid for the above mentioned school's also.
Let me repeat, I'm not a negative person nor do I believe that our Coach and Staff are negative also. It can be done, atleast on some level, and the current performance is unacceptable to all. As stated, over the years, I've formed opinions on coaches and staff's that I have known...lots of bad ones. I do respect and admire our current basketball staff...and that's from an "inside" opinion. If luck is a residue of hard work, these guys deserve some.
PS If I were the Woman's Basketball Coach I'd sell the heck out of our great Nursing Program.
