On another note the confrerence tournament is rumored to be a top 4 bye format with the bottom 8 playing in the first round. League looking to add three teams in case Fairfield leaves for the Patriot or gets into a new Catholic school league with the seven mentioned above. Suppsedly Siena and Iona want in that Catholic league as well but arent considered likely additions. Fairfield likely to Patriot i think since they extended Johnson till 2019 i think. I'm sure he asked for that protection because of the greater difficulty recruiting in the Patriot should it happen.

Nice additions. It's likely Stags will aim for the Patriot. Why they would ever extend Sydney is beyond me. Club woefully underachieved last year. Possibly emulating the De Wolfe extension? I wonder if Siena and/or Iona would be sought after by the A-10, after a few of their members "move on up" to replace schools lost to the new "Catholic League"? Siena might, under desperate circumstances, be a viable target....probably not the Gaels.

Monmouth is a bad idea.

You can bet JD will have a little extra motivation to beat the Hawks when they are welcomed into the MAAC.

Will create stronger competition for NJ "stay/return home" recruits.
Proximity to NYC, urban experience vs. better facilities and campus. Dunne vs. King Rice. Won't be easy for SPU, that's for sure.
May the best man win.

I want the Peacocks to win. It's hard enough already to recruit. We don't need 'stronger competition' with another school for players.

Personally, I would prefer a conference with fewer teams. With some exceptions, most schools have their ups and downs. Competing against eleven others schools rather than seven or nine gives you a lesser chance at that one spot in the Dance that is common to the MAAC. Twelve teams also means fewer out of conference games which I find interesting early in the season.

Cindycrawford.....I'm in total agreement. Think our current size is perfect....need one more replacement to even out the conference.

I think all members mentioned are excellent and welcome the competition. They are well ahead of our program and hopefully will force us to improve our current status. Amen

I do see Fairfield, Siena, Iona and Rder leaving just to different leagues. A 10 remnant will probably be looking for teams depending on how many go with the Catholic 7. I suppose they could for 7 to 9 more and FField, Siena and Rier have access to larger facilities. I dont know if that Westchester gig ever worked for Iona. So new MAAC will be more and more like the old NE conf and SPU loses any league"advantage" they might have had. Just think now Hurley can send his lessser kids right into our league regularly. Makes me all warm and fuzzy

I wonder whether or not Iona and Rider will be attractive to better conferences? Facilities like ours, small fan base, no great shakes academically. (I know, I know). My guess is Fairfield will be the first to leave. Marist will go if anyone will take them, though I read the Patriot League turned them down once already. Siena is the best candidate to eventually move on up to a current "A-10" level league, based on fan support and home facility. I think you have it pegged correctly, Figgy......the new MAAC, sans Fairfield and probably Siena, will be a bit weaker than it is currently, but A-10 remnants will not be much better......my guess is the pecking order will eventually morph into the National Catholic League and Big Six conferences......and then everyone else.

Don't we already face these issues when comparing SPU to Monmouth? Do you think Monmouth will have that much more of advantage over us by moving from the NEC to the MAAC?

The local papers here at the shore are praising the move for Monmouth and consider it a big step up. They are anxious to renew their old rivalry with Rider from the early 90's and they also mention playing SPU and Manhattan regularly as being much better draws than their current schedule.
The paper mentions that schools like Siena,Fairfield and Iona will be a much bigger local draw than the current NEC schedule. The Asbury Park Press covers the Hawks equally if not greater than SHU or RU coverage. When they're good they draw. Get a lot of local families and dads bringing kids to a college game much cheaper than a pro game for a family.
Interestingly they feel it will be a huge benefit to their recruiting. They point out that they feel the upper end of MAAC teams have more height and better talent than they are able to get now. They will have hands down the largest and finest on campus facility in the league from day one. They feel they can parlay the facilities plus the better schedule into much better recruiting.
Doesn't give me a warm and fuzzy feeling as to SPU. Our penny pinching administration looks like they will never upgrade the facility.Look at the fact we still haven't replaced a tickertmananger with the departure of Mary Ann Bruno, still have no season ticket packages for the regulars and no permanent SID months after the departures.SPU looks like a place in complete disarray.
