Spcfan is absolutely right about Monmouth's advantages. They have the Asbury Park Press coverage, they have a much better facility (who doesn't? ), and a stronger (and younger) local following. Monmouth's entry into the MAAC is going to hurt Saint Peter's.

Our new AD has been underwhelming so far; was hoping for better.

Are you implying our AD has not been allowed to replace staff who have left SPU?
Old U is going forward with theater productions, symposiums, etc.
Is athletics being singled out?

Don't necessarily agree with the priorities, but this is the direction the school has been trending since the Yanitelli era. A strong athletics program is not regarded as a necessary component in moving forward in the search for social justice.

Hard to criticize JQ at this point. My understanding is that athletic budgets (already the lowest in the MAAC by far) have been forced to be cut by the administration since JQ arrived. I'm sure he would love to fill the current vacancies but the great dilema is doing it as quick as possible versus find someone qualified who is willing to accept the position. One of those positions was previously filled by someone who wouldn't have the mimimum qualifications to work at most other institutions so how much could they possibly be paying? The other position is being filled by a Grad Student who from what I've seen should be offered the full-time job immediately if she hasn't been already.
As much as most of us (myself included) respected what Pat Elliot did here, how much did he do to improve our athletic programs on the field/courts? I think most of us would agree he was an upgrade from Bill Stein, but look at the programs that have enjoyed success and/or won championships in the past few years- Track, Basketball, Golf, Men's Soccer, Tennis- the coaches of those programs were each in place when PE arrived. In fact, PE let the soccer coach walk after a trip to the NCAA's and renewed DeWolf (how's that working out?). I don't mean that as a knock on PE, because I do feel he brought a lot to the table, but a reality check that there is not much that the AD has control of.

About the staffing issue......I don't buy it. In this job market, marketing and communications majors would give their proverbial right nut (or the female equivalent) to land a job with benefits. If we can't hire the right SID/Kennedy Club/Ticket Manager people in two months time, during a period where every employer has leverage and is using it, something is wrong.

Not to disagree, but one must remember the "direction" that was to follow the MacMahon donation. Athletics would be addressed after the Student Center was finished. With a March opening, it still needs to wait to see if there is any activity, either in substance or in announcements, come next school year. I don't subscribe to the social issue mentioned above, as that would imply competent maneuvers but will easily accept incompetent management as the cause. Right now wait and see is about all you can do.

Competency has neither relevance or meaning to those in the neocom world that only measure outcome in terms of the desired end or purpose that they wish to enforce.

Nice of you to acknowledge that competency is not part of your intellectual make up.

Huh!?!?!
.....anyway, no evidence of a comprehensive long range plan, at least none that I'm aware of, should be noted. You know, the 5- year, 10- year plan that the first year business student is taught, identifying and establishing goals along with the resources and means necessary to reach?
We've spent some $60 MM plus on a Student Center to enhance the student experience and serve as a focal point for campus life. Certainly not aware of all of the constraints, but never saw anything presented that would have given consideration to a project combining this with an athletic facility. Certainly a considerably larger expenditure but logically more efficient than a separate plant. To do it now the right way you're probably looking at about $70-75 MM, something that is not going to happen. Best we can look to is a fresh band aid for Yanitelli. A new coat of paint, maybe some chair back seating and a larger Coke-sponsored scoreboard. Wonder what ever happened to the alleged $1MM offer from Nike to plant their logo on our dome?
Oh we'll, no surprise. After all our big gov bureaucrats all can thank the World of Academia for what they give us today.

Without going into too much detail, johngalt and especially peascockblue have it about right. Peacock is also correct about the understanding that "athletics would be next ". Unfortunately, the opposite has occurred as enrollment, as with almost all colleges, has suffered. Budgets have been cut.
Regarding staffing (loyal) the positions have been posted for several months now. Go on the college website and look at the job descriptions....quite detailed. The Grad Assistant is doing a great job. I hope she is offered and accepts. The duties of the very important Finance position will not be easy to fill for a variety of reasons (see peacockblue). Meanwhile JQ and others (2) are working their you know what off to have our 19 teams run smoothly. I have a lot of respect for their work ethic. Amazing for a staff much smaller than most high schools.
As a graduate of SP all I can say is "the more things change, the more they remain the same". Too bad but thank God for the work ethic and committment of the AD Staff and Coaches.
