Spu just posted that Katie Arcuri is the new ad. Been at spu for 20 years so she knows the lay of the land. I’m guessing ot likes the choice as he has always had good things to say about her in his athletic interactions. Hope she’s great

Very happy. Katie has been the backbone of that Department for years. Knows everything inside and out. With just a small staff I hope that our posters expectations are not off the charts. There is little staff to help so it's full time just to keep everything afloat. Additional support staff needs to be hired so Katie is free to do the positive things everyone hopes for. At least Brian had Katie but who will she have ?

Curious sequence of events….hiring a permanent AD, followed by hiring a President within six months?
AD is one of the most important hires a new Prez can make.
What if new Prez wants their own AD, or thinks KA may not be up to the task? Why not put a permanent AD hire on ice until a new Prez can participate in the selection process?
All capabilities of personnel aside, on the surface the timing of the hire seems to be an amateurish move, from an organizational perspective, by SP Admin.

Seems more a move of incompetency than an ambush. There's no reason Katie couldn't have remained as the interim AD for the rest of the academic year and allowed the search to be conducted under the new president. I agree with most of OT1's assessment of Katie and her knowledge of the department, but IMO this shows that administration is content with the status quo. Katie will be able to run the department, keep the "ducks in a row", and outperform her predecessor, but I held out hope we could find someone in the mold of Felt or Elliot. We either didn't have the interest from qualified candidates or we choose to go the route of least resistance - after all, an outsider may come in and wonder where all that money from Elite 8 run actually went.
With all that said, if Baker's proposed rule change regarding NIL goes forward, SP and the MAAC is essentially dead as we know it. It will basically become the equivalent of FCS football and then schools like ours will seriously need to consider what the value is of putting out the investment to be in a "lesser subdivision" of D1 athletics.

Pride. Agree with you on the outside asking questions about revenue from the EE. I still would like to see an accountability. Plus, I'm an outsider. To your other point about NIL, I'm at a loss for that. To be honest, I haven't heard about the proposal but since NIL and portal, the middies are gonna be nothing more than a farm club.

Seems like this is the NCAA's way of admitting Congress has no intention of regulating NIL on a national level and they are tired of spending millions of dollars on lawsuits they are likely to lose.

Participated in “fireside chat” with everyone last night. I surmised from his statements that ability to fund raise is job one for admins. Specifically he spoke about the need for fundraising to complete rlc renovation. So I’m guessing that appointment of KA as ad is an indication of confidence in her ability to do that. But as mentioned above if ncaa prexy gets his way it won’t matter. There is so much emphasis on football power 5 I really have to wonder what this new structure means for the big east. Can they compete or or they collateral damage for football?

With info supplied by old timer, I tuned in last night to watch JuJu and Mississippi play Mount Saint Mary’s . Juju was sensational, the player we all thought he could be but never quite was for us. The Mount was the best MAAC team I have seen this season. They have the best backcourt in the MAAC with Lefew and Montgomery. If Montgomery is not rookie of the year I will be shocked. He could be the Mount’s best player. Their other players are also solid. I don’t think they are very deep but they are very very good. I have an inkling that they cannot play slow. They push and push and go to the rack constantly. They will be a challenge for most MAAC teams, including us. I am not sure we can keep them out of the lane. Might need to play a zone against them.

Reality.... Unfortunately, reading our loyal posters comments on the AD position both now and in the past, our expectations IMO are much too high. Bottom line is that the size of our Athletic Department is that of a high school level. IMO the most important thing that our Administration can do is increase the size and staff of the Department.....and that is not going to happen. The money, budget wise is just not there.
Even Bryan who had a great fundraising background was. not able to do much in that area while at SPU.Not enough time in the day given all his responsibilities. No additional sponsors and very few innovations to raise money. Not Brian's fault as I , and most of us , rate him A+ as AD. We had Tom Mc and a few others but that was about it.They would have been there anyway.
The one thing that I am sure of is that Katie's hire will be a major upgrade over our most recent AD. Perhaps as some have suggested we should hire an additional person to do fund raising. This way Katie can run the Department and have another whose full time job will be to fundraise. I believe, as all of us, that there are opportunities out there, so much so that the hiring of such a person would more than pay for itself. Katie will be just fine as long as we understand the realities of the situation.

But as mentioned above if ncaa prexy gets his way it won’t matter. Very perplexing to me. The priority is fundraising but we hire someone who's only experience is in compliance. Don't worry though, the RLC renovation will be important for us to be competitive in whatever D2 or D3 conference we end up in

The reality of the situation is a product of the extremely low support of athletics in general from the student body. In fact the alumni are not exactly in abundance in support. Just look at this board for alumni interest. Athletics also is considered a draw to increase enrollment. While athletics costs money I'm sure some one has measured the revenue from enrollment being D1 versus 2 or 3. As has been mentioned the closure of many smaller schools nee Saint Rose in Albany. Now a lot of comments been made of where the E8 money has gone. If I'm not mistaken I believe it is spread out over a few years. Correct me if I'm wrong on this. So taking this into account the Board might not think athletics would bring much extra revenue. I'm not as pessimistic as oldtimer as there could be merit to having an experienced in house body managing the Department. Hiring others to handle the development could be possible. Look at SHU. Felt does not handle basketball. Lyons still handles that. Now if you want to get pessimistic, when Paul left the department was down a body. Katie gets the job, but still down one. Do they bring in another to help with the program. The future will depend on the new President.
As an aside the NIL existence has one major flaw for athletics in general. Money. Where there is an abundance of money there will be greed and that leads to scandals. Schools do not do well with scandals. The greed developed will force change again.
