Seriously? To quote Danny Glover in Lethal Weapon, “I’m getting too old for this shit.”

I was under the delusion that Coach might be able to keep everyone together other than Corey, who was due for a big payday. IMO it would have given us a great chance to run it back. Now it feels like it's a matter of time until we see Zeigler, Reid, Randolph all jump. It definitely makes it hard as a fan to continue to care. I had more excitement coming off a 6-24 season in 2007 than I do coming off a MAAC title. Even in our conference we are going to be a big disadvantage going forward without a collective. Oh well we'll always have Paris (2022).

I hear ya, youngalum. This new world really takes the enjoyment out of rooting for guys that we could connect with and care about. Now it’s just guns for hire with no loyalty. Hogue would have played a big role after an injury riddled season. Such a shame.

Maybe SPU should implement a new scholarship rule that if you enter the transfer portal, you pay the money back. I don’t care if SPU is the only one to do it. This current system is complete garbage.

Problem is that might discourage players from coming to begin with. This is the reality in 2024. We’re all just having a difficult time accepting it.

Too bad.
Once he and Corey were healthy together, the team found itself. two all-MAAC Tourney players are gone.
In the words of the great philosopher Seinfeld, "We root for laundry".

The other part that really stings is the rules keep changing. Coach Bash was smart to recruit and get guys like Hogue, Randolph, etc. who had already transferred. They would have been ineligible to leave without sitting until about February of this year when the court overruled that two time transfers had to sit. I dont' see any other strategy now than to expect to recruit a whole new roster every year. What fun is that?

That's a bummer. I was thinking earlier how lucky (so far) SP is only losing 1 player. I think Hogue is from Detroit? May go home. Who knows. Unfortunately, that's the cards we're dealt. This portal nonsense is a coach's nightmare.

I was wondering if the one time transfers would become two time transfers having used up yet another year of eligibility. I guess I have my answer. Agree about Corey but I think that houge will be basically a lateral move. Maybe gets to the other mac. Would be stunned by p6 offer for sure. Valley maybe but no higher.

The whole system stinks. Really bums me out. Are the collectives a "donation" ... like i'd donate to that over the School, but I don't know what the solution is... i feel like the school desperately needs the money just to get by too... sigh

Which goes against everything NIL was supposed to be about. I feel the same way, I'd rather donate to a collective but I know the school relies on our donations. Perhaps that's why we don't currently have a collective that I am aware of. Iona, Siena, Fairfield, Quinnipiac all have collectives up and running. Canisius said something the other day about starting one that would be focused on player retention. Only other strategy I can think of is to start recruiting nothing but foreign born players who aren't eligible for NIL money. They'd have no monetary interest to transfer.

I would just reiterate Cindy’s wisdom. We would never have enough to retain a really good player like Washington. So maybe we retain competent players but for how long and to what end bc if they stay and excel they just take a bigger bag and leave. We might as well take guys looking to prove themselves and put together a roster with a chip on its shoulder. Of course that means yearly overhaul like my closet. So far I haven’t seen much effect at the Maac schools mentioned. Iona lost many and got a big as far as I’ve seen. Canisius is dreaming. The others have more money but idk if it’s determinative. Imagine Marist trying to retain Rik Smits today! Yikes!! The foreign angle is interesting but I haven’t really thought that much on it. Intriguing though

On second thought Smits was a foreign national so it might have worked. In the alternative imagine the guys valvano had at Iona. But in truth they were already being well compensated even then

Figgy good point on the MAAC collectives. Supposedly Iona was giving every player something last year. That translated to a 7th place finish and everyone leaving. Their biggest fish Gordon bailed before the season even ended. Not a good ROI.
I don’t know but sipping on a nice Russell Reserve private barrel tonight. Happy weekend everyone.
