As Warner Wolfe would say, "If you had Rutgers plus 17 points.....you lost!"
Intensity for 40 minutes; Chazz and Wyche hit their threes, Marvin with a great game. Improved ball movement against a passive RU defense. Only Mack came to play
Not to take anything away from our effort, but this game reminded me of NU-SPU, but with the roles reversed......we were laser focused all night and RU players were slumping around and not going to the glass with any intensity, until it was too late. As Wenzel said, "Coach Jordan is sure to have a few choice words for his players".
If Q can get healthy and Desi returns before the MAAC gets into full swing, there appears to be a ray of light at the end of this long tunnel.
Chazz being an effective long range threat would really do wonders for spacing the floor.

Glad to see Cindy and spcfan sitting directly behind the bench. Great job by EVERYONE! Trevis played great and Marvin is obviously a very special player. Also, although not in the stats, an outstanding job by Elias. Savor the win but also worry about Q. Is he working his way into shape and is coming around and how much is his injury really hampering him? Good to win with a great perimeter game, great defense and pretty good offensive flow but still need the inside game of Q to be dominant.

Outstanding game from Marvin . Chazz came up real big on both ends . Trevis was great getting ball up court and in half court sets and so tough going to the hoop . He did his part in holding down the very good Mack but defensive tactics by staff and hustle by all our guys were big part of that . So nice to see Elias playing really well for us now after the tough start . I love what I see from Travis in his time on the court ; my guess is that he is big time player for us for his three years . Q actually looked by far his best since first game ; some good and tough plays from him when we needed them ; got really nervous when he went down so hard on that one foul where he was great in fighting for position . But solid , solid effort from all the players who played for us . Tyler , in particular , had some key moments out there and Jamel was tough and made big shot . JD and staff with optimum sub pattern . Nice win against Big Ten team on their court .

Jerry Carino's coverage of game on his twitter is fun read for Peacock fans . We will see if any of NBC ,CBS and ABC locals give us any highlight coverage at 11 . Would be an upset but the guys deserve mention on this confident and hustle win . Outstanding three shooting and gang rebounding was about as good as it gets . This one is like the SHU game last year . Peacock fans can watch it many times .

An impressive and unanticipated win. Offensive flow was good, we showed confidence and rotated well on the defensive end. Can't say enough for Marvin. Without taking anything away from the effort, must give credit for having Eddie Jordan on the opposing bench. As in the St. Francis game, has no understanding of game flow, apparently goes in with his game plan and lacks ability or capacity to adjust when changes dictate. Took our 3-point, 24% shooting stat as a given and made little adjustment when we got hot.
All well, but the biggest question I need to ask, is how did our staff learn so much, get so smart on the offensive end in such a short time? How did they suddenly learn ball movement, how to attack the basket, and most important, teach our guys to take and make 3's. I am just totally confounded by this sudden transformation, epiphany. Certainly nothing as simple-minded a result as making vs missing your 3's.

Galt, I see you are insinuating it has just been the players failure to shoot well causing our terrible start.
Trying to be objective, I would have to disagree. We were tentative and had poor ball movement in the three games I saw via web stream. We did not execute well in the half court in any of the three games and got precious few open looks. We were just not ready to play the Purps and were outhustled all night.
I agree we look a lot better when shooting well, but, some responsibility for the "underachievement" to date has to go on the coaching staff, no? At the very least, there should be some accountability directed to the coaching staff for the Niagara debacle (not ready to play, outhustled, beaten by a far inferior team).....right?
In any event, we are both on the same team, wanting Q to heal quickly and Desi to come back and provide a consistent outside threat. Maybe, just maybe, Chazz can become Steve Samuels Jr?

Wow!!! Did not see this coming for sure. Feels good to be wrong , but also feel I was right about what we had to do offensively. Chazz, Ty, Boone, Wyche, Hester and even Fields taking and making shots opens up a little more for Marvin. We just beat the snot out of RU off the boards on the floor and with intensity. Need to build from here and not return to tentative ways. Some nights it won't go, but if we don't go for it we're dead as we don't have white squads and blue squads as some programs do

figgy, couldn't agree with you more as I did in a previous post. We missed shots but kept attacking the basket. Think all fans felt a sigh of relief but, as you say, we have to build on this.
Don't want to beat a dead horse but I'm concerned about Q. We both saw him limping off the court in the Niagara game. Played 18 minutes today. IMO we need him because we can't win consistently having to play perimeter basketball. Worked tonight and perhaps with Marvin, Desi et. al it will bring us victories but having an "inside game" is crucial in college basketball.
Waiting to hear Cindy and spcfan's eyewitness accounts.

Loyal - not just insinuating. Staff didn't suddenly learn 'em how to be aggressive, not tentative, ball rotation and reversal, and most importantly, how to shoot 3's. These skills, plays, decision making is taught and practiced from day 1. Same on the defensive side. Tonight we worked hard and EXECUTED. Can't make it more simple.
BTW, thought officiating was more than balanced. Think we might have gotten the better whistle several times.

Most has already been said......great team win with a lot of people contributing, plus Dominique's usual dominant game. Just when you think the ship is sinking you get a ray of hope. Obviously, getting Welton and Washington healthy is key, but on the positive side it has given other players some valuable court time.

Great win for SPU.Tremendous effort by the team, fearless and all of the players had a look in their eyes of not wanting to be denied of this win.
Marvin was tremendous made shot after shot hit the boards well and was all around the best player on the floor by far.
True team effort contributions by Chazz,Tyler,Trevis and Jamel as well as nice effort off the bench by Elias .Elias played well allowing us to rest Q when needed .Boone also with a nice effort for SPU and Travis played a bit made a few shots as well.
Great defensive intensity and loved the way the coaches and the players broke the game down into segments in the huddle, constantly implored each other to win the next four minutes and counted the consecutive stops on defense to pull away to the lead.
I must say b/t/w that Jamel Fields is an emotional leader on the bench and a warrior on the court.Desi was all over the guys supportive on the bench talking to the guys resting on the bench as well as Fields. It was great getting to see and hear John instructing the team in the huddle during the breaks as well as Matt Henry imploring the team to get another stop after each break.
I can't say enough about how proud i was by the way they represented the college, the effort they gave and the job done to compensate for the loss of Desi by all of the guys who played a role in the win especially the shooting of Chazz in the clutch and the great all around game of Marvin Dominique.
Also Trevis Wyche did a great job handling the ball against pressure in the second half and he and Jamel driving to the hole broke down the Rutgers defense then kicking it out to an open shooter for the shot.
Also i loved the plays John set up out of the break in the second half a few times leading to a layup off well set screens attacking the basket. We outhustled RU all night attacked on offense and played outstanding man to man defense all night against a much bigger RU team.
Noticed that Desi's wrap was off his hand so i have to figure he may not be out that much longer. Hopefully guys like Chazz,Tyler and Trevis continue this aggressive play when Desi does return.
One thing i must add it was great to see us play with the type of defensive intensity we have become accustomed to under John when he has the horses.Lets keep the momentum going and on to the weekend.
