If it ain't "broke", don't fix it but if it is "broke" at least try to fix it . JD lost one game for us - think it was the BU game - by waiting too long to try and change the rhythm of a game that was going terribly against us . He almost did not give our guys a chance to win this one today . I know that he and staff have developed some game plans in past seasons and indeed this season that were absolutely key to giving our guys an opportunity to win - the LIU and RU and Iona games were examples this season .
You can tell from Hanburger's post game interviews how emphatic the staff is on developing the game plan that they believe gives our team the best chance to win - not that this is different from what other coaching staffs are doing . But you can also tell from his interviews that this staff may overemphasize sticking to that plan or under appreciate some of the abilities of these players to do things outside their game plan's perimeters . In the interview , Hanburger seemed almost apologetic - and certainly not enthusiastic - about how we won the game .
Well , for almost thirty minutes of this game , CCSU in half court sets beat us up on both ends of the floor . Why ? Damned if I know . Hey , you can try to stick to the plan . You can make some subs to change things up . But today it became abundantly clear that they were driving to the bucket or hitting threes on their offensive plays and on defense they were looking like a team of Bill Russells when we tried to drive to the bucket . So why not change the rhythm of the game to see if there is something that we have a big advantage at in this particular game . Hanburger in the post-game seemed to say that if you can be successful with the press but you can also get carved up with it . I agree. But what the heck is the difference whether you lose by 15 or 30 . Give your guys a chance to win the game . JD did to his credit but it would have been too late if not for some spectacular efforts by our guys .
It was so good to see Patrick make the winning play today and a couple of other key plays for us in recent games . He will be one of the keys to how well we fare in the MAAC . Darius may be playing with more energy if the combo of Patrick and Markese can cut down on the minutes he has to play . Yvon , Blaise and Desi all had quite a few bad moments when things were going terribly but all were key to the comeback . You have to admire players a helluva lot when they stay in a game where things are not going particularly well for them . Chris B is a valuable asset and Chazz will just keep developing . And it is fun this season to watch the guys on the bench supporting the team on the floor no matter how the game is going at the moment . Anyone know what happened with Elias today ?
One last thing . In the final part of the rally there was one hellua impressive play by Desi in addition to his key jumpers . It was when he skied for a defensive rebound , dribbled upcourt and on the run hit , I believe Yvon , with a perfect three-quarter court pass for a driving lay-up . Beautiful to watch .
