If this guard is eligible this season (hardship waiver sought....Granny illness).........having received solid offers from SHU, CT, etc.....
Iona will have the best MAAC club since the Overton/Simmons/Legler days.....and maybe a better one.
Glover/Machado/Momo/Smyth...............plus solid depth. Quite impressive. Top 25 material.
You've got to hand it to Cluess, period. Now I better understand why Francesa slobbers all over him.

Having said that, still eternally grateful the Gael coach chose not to press us in the MAAC Final until it was too late! :>)

Their depth will be a secondary issue if MOMO plays as you can't discount potential issues of playing time and the many JUCOs. Even at their worst they were going to be at the top, but still could have issues come tournament time. Actually begs to ask us about our recruiting. Might now consider a top guard for the last ship for two years down the road. Not sure about two bigs coming in this weekend, but there is a transfer guard who was a stud in PA. The MOMO affair might just have pushed Dunne to this avenue.

Looks like Cleuss can recruit, but Dunne really out coached him with X's an O's in the MACC Tournament. I totally agree on Cleuss not utilizing the press. If Iona pressed us earlier there may have been a different outcome.

Yes, we've had some glitches in our recruiting, but everyone knows it's a real crap shoot. It's too soon to push the panic button. Despite what many people may think, there are still a lot of excellent unsigned players in the marketplace. From what I've heard, we still have some aces left on the table and we may come out smelling like a rose. Keep the faith, because we could be hearing some good news very soon.

eport you went from "should" to "could" I don't find that too comforting. Sounds like at least one of your conversations was overly optimistic. Are we about to do something or not? All this tip toeing would seem to mean that we are not a favorite for anyone and need to get lucky because of another school's decision or that we are talking really on the margins in either talent, academics or both. Tell me I'm wrong. Pleeeeeze.

Read Peacocks post above Figgy. It appears the staff has to choose between taking a transfer guard who helps in 2 years with credentials and three years of eligibility or one of two bigs with possible academic issues, one of whom is an impact player but would require we wait till end of August to find out if he can come and with one year of eligibility.Should be an interesting summer. The change of heart by the Florida player really blindsided us but the staff does have options.

On another note saw that 6-9 Marcus Hopper went to Siena. Was mentioned with SPC some time ago. He seemed to get a lot of hype on scout throughout the year but didn't seem to have any upper level interest.

Hmmmm.......a front line enhanced only by Ferguson is likely to come up way short (no pun intended) even in the MAAC. However, getting an above average big guy with one year eligibility may not be strategic, as Iona and Fairfield seem beyond our reach going into the season. Even a one year, front line wonder is not likely enough to put SPC over the top next season. If If If If If the guard is a superior talent, it may be well worth taking the "long view". Disclaimer: all this is hypothetical, as I do not even know the names, much less the skill levels, of the players in question.

Figgyprez, I went from should to could because I just don't know what to believe anymore. Supposedly, we had an impact big that was a slam dunk to sign and than it fell through at the last second. This has been an ongoing theme throughout our recruiting process. I guess Yogi Berra knew what he was talking about when he said, "It's never over until it's over". On the other hand, Yogi's expression may work to our advantage because it's not close to being over. We have some bigs coming to campus that are just a good, if not better than the last recruit to defect. Recruiting is like sales, you have to throw a lot of sh...t up on the wall and hopefully some of it sticks. I'm confident that Dunne will get his man.

Im confused as to how we could get a player that can contribute next year but only have one year left? A transfer would have to sit a year, and I thought Juco's could only play two years at the junior college level, leaving them with two year eligibility. The only thing I could think of is a graduating senior could enroll in another school for their master's if they had a year of eligibility left.

. The only thing I could think of is a graduating senior could enroll in another school for their master's if they had a year of eligibility left. You don't know how correct you are about this option. Problem is we won't know 'till late if this "impact player" will come. If we wait and he doesn't ,we come up empty.

Thanks Cindy. I wouldn't think there would be any academic problems then, player would just have to be accepted. Don't know if you want to say, but could this be a player MAAC fans might know well?

All or nothing for a player with only one year of elligibility seems pretty risky. Of course, if we have no other quality bigs in the pipeline then we have little choice and nothing to lose. Positioning the program for a title run when Conley and Samuels are seniors seems much more logical.
I know we are all fans and want to be optimistic but we have been severely out-recruited by Iona, Siena, Rider, and Fairfield. It takes more than recruiting to win but it sure does help.
