Ed Ford, "The Faa", was found dead today at the age of 66.
He had been in declining health, but was still working for the Jersey City Recreation Dept and he was discovered in his combination office and apartment at Caven Point. NJ.com listed the cause of death as congestive heart failure.
He could be tough in his criticism and he sent plenty in the direction of SPC athletics and the people who worked there (including me) over the years.
But I can also say with certainty that he genuinely loved the College and wanted its teams and athletes to do well.
Something a lot of people don't know is that it was the Faa who found the land that became Jaroschak Field and told Bill Stein about it. Before it was developed, the land was overgrown with trees and weeds and a lot of people didn't even know it belonged to Hudson County and was part of Lincoln Park. Without Jaroschak Field as a site for home games since 1990, SPC would have had a difficult time growing as a Division I program, maybe even staying in Division I

Eddie Ford was a Jersey City icon. I remember him best for his love affair with the O'Koren/Spanarkel Hudson Catholic teams of the mid 70's and for his buying me a beer at Laico's a few years later. He critiqued St. Peter's, IMO, mainly because he wanted so badly for SPC to replicate the Webster/O'Dea/Laurie years, knowing what that meant to Jersey City. RIP.
