Hey all:
I received an invitation to participate in a survey inquiring, among other things, which name we should go to should we obtain university status. The choices were as follows:
University of Saint Peter
Saint Peter's Jesuit University
Saint Peter's University
I went with the last choice simply because it would seem like the easier transition from Saint Peter's College. That said, the other choices are decent and would be fine too.
What does everyone else think?

I took the same survey. I think i voted the same as you did, but I am not 100% sure. I'm not too sure any of the 3 choices are amazing, but any improvements to the school are fine with me.

Perhaps we should go with St. Peter's- The Jesuit University of New Jersey as that would answer some questions about the school that the Siena folks had during the tournament

Took the Survey also. Chose St. Peter's University. Interesting that there was not one question on Athletics role in the College/University...blasted them on that.
Also mentioned SPC's history of poor Administrative thinking and planning. Truth is we've gone downhill while others have risen above us. Athletics is one example but I posted some specific names of former employees (Frank Mertz, FDU President Emiritus, among other) who left SPC to achieve better things elsewhere. Anyone remember Sebastian Raciti ( Economics) who went on to bigger and better things at Ramapoo? Certain that there are countless others.
The phrase "penny wise and pound foolish" has characterized SPC for decades. We need far reaching, future oriented thinkers. The fact that the Survey made no mention of Athletics role in not only attracting students but giving the College somewhat of an identity is telling.

"Jesuit" conveys cerebral imagery. In contrast, "St. Peter's University" sounds like it could easily be read off a matchbook. Of course, to be truthful, most of our cerebral efforts involve figuring out how the heck we are going to get a rebound next season! :>)

Saint Peter's University is the obvious choice.......simple and to the point. I also was surprised and disappointed that Athletics was not mentioned in the survey.

In a perfect world, the obvious and easiest choice in my opinion is Saint Peter's University. Here is the problem,as it was told to me. There is a hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey that goes by the name of Saint Peter's University Hospital and they are obviously not affiliated with our college.. This is why this question is being asked on the survey. I don't have a problem with Saint Peter's Jesuit University. I do not like University of Saint Peter.

Don't like the unintended consequence.
Saint Peter's University = SPU
Actually, University of Saint Peter's, to me adds some profundity, identity. Might take a bit more time to get accustomed. Maybe add; "The" University of Saint Peter's. Much like, The Ohio State University.

I don't see why it's important that we change the name at all. Just about every school in in the country is now a university, and some like Boston College retain their traditional name. Am I impressed by Rider or Monmouth UNIVERSITY? Do I look down on Williams or Swarthmore because they are Colleges. Even the "Crown Jewel" of the MAAC retains the name Siena College. I agree with Sludge and cringe at the idea of our cheerleaders yelling out S-P-U...S-P-U...S-P-U !

Never thought of it before but agree totally with Cindy. Since that was not one of our choices, did the powers that be overlook that also,,,St. Peter's College is just fine.
Find Sludge's comment insightful. Not too much worried about ouir cheerleaders but rather our opponents cheerleaders and fans...S P U !
PS The savings in switching logos would probably pay JD's salary for years to come!

Im with Cindy, I don't see any reason or added benefit to change.
Also like to add that I went to the Alumni event in Hoboken to watch the game and what a great experience. Bar was packed with 200 plus alumni, SPC on every TV with the sound on even though you could barely hear it with all the excitement. Place went crazy for every bucket (first half at least), and periodic chants of S-P-C would happen throughout the game. One of the best experience and feeling of an alum I've had since I graduated.

I too would keep the name "college", but unfortunately, the 'University' designation carries some clout.
Except for a very few highly recognizable schools, like Providence or Dartmouth, schools who call themselves a "college" are looked down upon by high school guidance counselors and parents who are mostly ignorant of an institution's real qualities. In the past when places like the NJ state colleges have changed their name to "University", applications for admission have increased.
If the name is to change, I favor the University of Saint Peter ( no apostrophe s needed ) to avoid confusion with the hospital in New Brunswick.

While we all have memories of how great SPC was in our youth, the fact of the matter is that SPC has stood still in developing as an academic institution while our peer schools have moved in establishing themselves as quality institutions. For example, most of the schools on our BB schedule are rated way ahead of SPC. In last years US News & World Report of College rating, we are rated in a grouping with Georgian Court, William Paterson, Central Conn. State, and just beating out Caldwell and Kean University. In the ranking of best regional schools for the North East, Villanova is #1, but Loyola is #2, Fairfield is #4, Marist is #10, Manhattan is #17, Canisius is #20, Iona is #33, Rider is #36, Niagara is #58....SPC is #104 - in the 3rd tier! Other schools, Wagner is #25, Monmouth U. is # 40. SPC has done little to help itself in establishing it as a quality academic school.
Even in local high schools, the councilors rarely mention SPC as an option for seniors. I have 4 kids who went to Christian Brothers Academy and Red Bank Catholic, and when I went to College night at those schools, SPC wasn't represented. Most Jersey kids south of Hudson County don't even know SPC exits. Even my kids friends, when they found out I went to SPC, asked me where it was! If you think that the ratings are an aberration, the Princeton Review of Colleges has basically the same results as the US News & World Report. Kids and parents do read these publications to get some insight to schools. I know that I did and so did my kids, and their friend.
The best news I heard was that SPC is considering university status. Having "university" in its name will be a great PR move for the school. It will improve the perception of SPC as a quality institution, and, as we all know, perception is greater than reality.
Cindy mentioned Swarthmore and Williams as schools not having the University title. Well, they don't need one because the are two of the top rated liberal arts college in the nations and their reputation precedes them. Boston College, a university, couldn't change to Boston University for obvious reasons. We all tend to demean Monmouth and Rider because we remember them when they were, in our opinion, "rinky-dink" schools. But by going going to University status, they have improved their image and visibility dramatically, and this has lead to an increase in quality student enrollment.
I know that many of you will feel offended by this info, well don't take it out on me. I'm just the messenger. These are facts, or better yet, perceived facts. Believe me, I love SPC and have great memories, but times are changing and SPC has to change also. SPC issues are far greater than athletic budgets. If you improve the image of the school, it will bring in more students, revenue will increase, budgets will increase, the sports programs will benefit
And don't think that rival coaches don't use these ratings as another recruiting weapon.

That is a factually based, objective and insightful post. Those of us who graduated more than 30 years ago do tend to see things through a dated prism.
Thanks (I think). :>)

I don't really care what the name of the school is personally. The college needs to change more than its name if it wants to improve the poor history of thinking and planning that oldtimer references along with the stats 68grad points out. Changing from "College" to "University" doesn't fix incompetence. At least from an athletic standpoint the college is going in a positive direction.
