I think he will do a good job there. It will be interesting if John now is associated with the Fairfield job.I would think the administration may refuse permission to interview within the conference.A move within the league would be a real black eye for us as would a move to Monmouth. Biggest problem with associating his name with openings is you can bet rival coaches will use this against us in recruiting. i am aware of one high school target that has others our level involved who will try to use this for sure. Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Good for Cooley but I'm not a big fan of his after listening to some of his comments in the last week of the season (although he was complimentary after losing to us). It says he's a native of Providence but I'm not sure how he will do there though. I don't know much about the program but I would think it's a pretty tough place to recruit- not going to get NYC kids that are wanted by other Big East programs so he'll have to take on some projects and find some diamonds in the rough.
Who gets to the NCAA tournament first- Willard at SHU or Cooley at PC? Or neither?

I consider both of those jobs to be among the toughest in the Big East. Probability is that SHU is a bit easier due to NYC, North Jersey recruiting base. Cooley was at BC and as such knows New England well and he did a great recruiting job at Fairfield but turning PC around won't be an easy task.

Cryptic comment from Carino on his site about Cooley's move and its possible impact on two Jersey programs , one with coaching vacancy ( Monmouth , I assume ) and one not with such ( Tigers or Peacocks ? )

Seems a little premature talking about JD moving on. Successful MAAC coaches don't step down in conference stature. McCaffrey, Gonzales, Willard, Cooley, Hewitt, everybody steps up. No head coach that is successful goes side ways or down in league stature and no one moves within the same conference.
It is possible that Dunne has shown enough to get something like a Hofstra or Northeastern type of job, but he hasn't won enough to get a Big East or A-10 position. One twenty win season with three sub .500 seasons out of five doesn't get it done. I don't see an A.D. sticking his neck out for a coach with an overall losing record and trying to sell it to alumni. Dunne has turned SPC around but can he sustain it? If he can, someone will surely grab him.
If he has another great year next season with a regular season or playoff title, his stock will rise considerably. But if SPC falls back to sixteen wins and finishes in fourth or fifth place in the MAAC, his stock will likely diminish. The chances of SPC finishing ahead of Iona, Fairfield, and Rider next year seem slim. JD needs to be at or near the top of the MAAC for at least two consecutive seasons to be an attractive candidate at a step up league.
If he were to leave, it would be a blow, but it would be nice to get someone who really wants to be here and not just use it as a stepping stone. We need a Jersey guy who wants to stay in Jersey and not chase a buck. Danny Hurley (definitely not Bobby) would have been a good fit, as is Kevin Boyle at Saint Pat's, former Siena player Marc Brown who is now the coach at NJCU, Chuck McBreen at Ramapo who is a Hudson County native, Chris Casey former assistant to Ted Fiore and Norm Roberts at Saint John's, or the current coach at NJIT.
I think JD will be here for awhile. Might be unfortunate for him but good for us.

I agree with your logic completely on where JD could wind up. I don't think he gets a big 6 type job based on his resume. One big run in 6 years won't be enough at that level. He would definitely have a shot at a job like a Hofstra as you point out. Hofstra gave the job last year to a Welsh assistant when they abruptly fired him for the DUI charge on an interim basis for a year but they seemed to be pleased with him and the job probably doesn't open now. JD was mentioned there before Welsh was hired in the NYC papers. As to potential hires Chris Casey is the head coach at C.W. Post, he replaced Cluess when he left for Iona. Not sure but i think they pay as much or more than we do. It's a high level D2 job.Doubt he'd make the move now but you never know.He does have the St John's connection as does Elliott so i guess it might be a possibility. Boyle would be a likely choice for SPC since at our pay scale a high school coach would have to be considered but rumors are he didn't interview well last time around when JD was hired. I think JD is happy here despite the difficulties in working at SPC with resources and facilities so i don't think he moves down in conference or lateral ,never a good career move.I agree i think he's here a while longer.

Great point in the last paragraph by spcfan. JD does seem very happy at SPC. He is well liked by everyone including the Administrators outside of athletics. His close relationship with Pat Elliott is also not to be overlooked. Of course, it's now up to PE to convince the powers above that a considerable increase in salary is in order. Did someone say wealthy alumni? That is the route Manhattan has gone in buying out BR's contract. Now if JD only had the inside track on a big man, there would be an additional reason to stay...but only he knows that.

The major reason for JD to stay is that having won a MAAC Championship (and even to a large extent before) he has complete job security at SPC. There are no wealthy alumni donors that will be calling for JD's head after a few poor seasons. It would be great to get JD a raise (who knows maybe there's even a escalator clause in his contract for if he won the MAAC Championship) but with wealthy alumni donors come people who think they should have a say in matters (look at the Manhattan situation). Also, look at the women's coach- to my knowledge the only other full time coach at the school- one winning season in six years and she is offered a contract extension, then puts out one of the worst teams in the history of the school. Not exactly a high standard for winning there. Finally, as Peacock pointed out a few weeks back, his wife is bringing in a decent amount of money so it's not as if JD is fighting to put food on the table for his family. He can wait a few years and hope a big 6 type offer comes his way and cash in, but until then I see him staying at SPC.

I agree 100% a lateral move is usually not a career enhancer. However, in this instance, it may be a viable option, due to two factors: 1. 2x salary 2. JD is now at peak exit value. A few mid pack (or worse?) finishes the next few years will not enhance JD's candidacy for a better gig. Hey, I hope JD stays, but would not be at all surprised if he made a lateral move, for the above reasons. Given how the roster is constructed (little skill inside) and our desperate need for big men, we are uniquely vulnerable to a coaching change. It won't be easy, but if JD goes, let's hope we quickly make a move (am sure fallback options are already being considered) and allow a new coach to be on board and have at least a shot at the spring signing period.....though that will be a very tall order. Hopefully, no need for a six week cluster-putz "committee search"......let PE roll the dice and get out of his way.

I agree Loyal. If he does go we need to move quickly. I would trust Pat Elliot's judgement on it and let him make the call quickly and efficiently.By the time you form a committee and go through that process we could lose out on the spring signing period.
