Offense is half the game. Three point shooting is universally mentioned by almost every successful D 1 coach as the most important arrow to have in your quiver.
Year. FG%. 3 Point %
‘24. 38.4. 27.3
‘23. 39.1. 29.3
‘22. 42.7. 35.0
‘21. 40.0. 32.3
‘20. 40.5. 34.2
‘19. 43.1. 32.5
‘18. 42.0. 33.7
‘17. 43.6. 38.1. (Best Kenpom SPU team, by far, since ‘91)
‘16. 42.2. 32.7
‘15. 41.2. 34.3
‘14. 40.7. 31.6
‘13. 41.3. 33.6
‘12. 40.6. 31.5
‘11. 40.0. 34.4
We’ve either misjudged the ability of our recruits to shoot effectively, or made the ability of a targeted recruit to shoot a low priority on the recruiting trail.
No matter how effectively athletic players grind it out on defense, these stats say our roster has to be better balanced and prioritize players who can shoot, complementing the existing recruiting focus.
That’s my view from the couch.😊

Sobering stats. I agree, we need scoring in the worst way. I wonder how much of a difference Tanksley would have made this season?

If my math is correct after looking at the team stats, we do not play to our strength. Our 2 point conversation rate is 44.5% and our 3 point rate as pointed out is a dismal 27.3%. When you calculate the total points from each, taking 2 point shots remains the better option for us by 4%-5% per 100 shots. But maybe more important, the psychological advantage of seeing the ball going through the basket more frequently increases the adrenalin and helps create a better rhythm for the offense. So if I were coaching, I would concentrate on shorter shots and more going to the rack in order to try and spark the offense. Maybe Coach Bash sees things in practice that gives him a different perspective. But getting outplayed by a D3 team is alarming. Could be time to mix things up a little.

Dreamweaver, you made my day. I’m old school. I used to coach my son’s teams and teach them how to shoot in the pant before taking 3s that hardly ever go in. I say the same thing about our Peacocks and even the pro teams I follow. Take the higher percentage shot. Who knows, you might even get fouled and make a 3 point play the old fashioned way.
So thanks for your post and let’s hope the team pays attention to the stats as well.

The conventional, old fashioned 3 point play is a lost art.

Makes sense to me to work for the good short range jumper as opposed to heaving up the three and missing at our rate. Will have to start working earlier in the offensive zone to get the best opportunity.

Also of note, 3 point tries usually result in long rebounds that land in the hands of the opposition. Shorter shots if missed give the offense a chance for a put back or a kick out pass to start another offensive play.
