HEY RONNIEDOES MARC MITHCELL GET A NEW CONRACT EXTENSION TOO OK
I hope if true Sha’s new contract includes a large buyout to discourage raiders and compensate us for those that do.

For those in the know, is Sha’s new deal a three year extension to his original deal and he now has a five year deal in place? Or is his deal a brand new three year deal that ends in 2024?
As a fan and follower of the SPU program for decades, I believe the MAAC has gotten extremely competitive from top to bottom. There have always been a few good teams at the top of the league but now, there are few if any weak links. And in my opinion, it has to do with the quality of coaches throughout the MAAC. Monmouth has become more than respectable since King Rice arrived and teams like Marist, Canisius, Fairfield, and Niagara, all play solid defense which has really made those programs very competitive, just as it has for SPU. In order to become an elite MAAC team, you no longer are going to be able to rely on just your offense or just your defense. Unless you are solid in both areas, you are going to be a middle of the road MAAC team. And Pitino has certainly raised the bar for everyone, like it or not.
When I watch the NCAA tournament and see mid major programs giving fits to the heavy weights, I realize that with a little more size and capable 3 point shooters, top of league MAAC teams are not far away from making some end of season noise. When I look around the MAAC and see transfers from supposedly better leagues, I don’t see these players come in and dominate in the MAAC. There is no reason SPU or other MAAC teams couldn’t be the next North Texas, Oral Robert’s, or Abilene Christian. I think it is a lot closer than most realize.

Dreamweaver- I agree that the league has become very competitive and balanced but I don’t necessarily think that’s a good thing. We haven’t had a top 100 team in four seasons so it’s been more consistent mediocrity across the board rather than programs elevating themselves to a higher level. There may be no weak links but the conference as a whole is probably the weakest it’s ever been. I think a big part of that has been the transfer culture but also a lot of poor to average coaches.
Pitino will raise the bar as you say and it’s hard for me to see them not being in the top 100 sooner than later. Anything can happen in the tournament so the top team winning is never a given, but the major question will be is there another program or two that can raise their level to become a top 100 caliber team over the course of an entire season.. After watching us this season and looking at what players Siena and Monmouth will be losing, I’m not sure I see that happening in the next few seasons.

In ‘17, Peacocks were #95 in Kenpom....by far our highest ranking in three decades.
Monmouth (upset in the semifinal prior to our so game) was #81. Gaels #117.
E past three years, the top MAAC clubs were #186, #145 and #191.
Coaches didn’t get dumber....transfers up the ladder decimated the MAAC (and other low mids). (IMO)

Just to clear up some comments on a revamped Yanitlli. First of all the school is not wasting money on it as our super donor and former player 'Tom McMahon liked the idea of the Armory but indicated that there were a myriad of problems in making that our new arena and designated his donation to revamp Yanitelli. If not for that purpose I don't think the donation would have been made. Lets at least see how it comes out including the parking situation before we put thumbs down on it.As to the schedule why don't those of us, I will, send a note to Rachel and Coach Sha suggesting a few games in the Armory maybe including the women playing as part of a double-header against a strong women's program, We could try Rutgers, Penn State, Georgstown, ans St. Johns for the men as maybe it would be awkward to play against Seton Hall at least for now.Any thoughts on this from other Board contributors?

How did SPC handle the booming crowd for that Rutgers game At the Armory. While it was in the middle of a renovation of the Armory, could it have handle the Expected four thousand crowd. Notice the track and lack of bleachers. Couldn’t put bleaches that might ruin the track. Some of those who attended that game might express some comment. It’s just not as simple as “let’s just play a few at the Armory.”

Coaches didn’t get dumber....transfers up the ladder decimated the MAAC (and other low mids). (IMO) Coaches didn’t get dumber but there are also some bad or overrated coaches in my opinion. Masiello has been a complete disaster after his first three seasons and Manhattan gave him an extension. Baggett is a good recruiter but hasn’t won a big game in a decade. Rice had the best team in the league for two years and got nothing out of it and couldn’t get out of the first round this year with quite possibly the best team again. Quinnipiac and Fairfield invest more money into their programs and coaching staffs than most schools but have very little to show for it. Quinnipiac especially seems to lose all of their talented players every year. On the positive side of it, Sha, Carm, and Paulus all show promise as good coaches but I think we need to see what direction those programs go in the next few years. JD has at least gotten Marist to respectability after years of several terrible coaches but we’ll see if they can become a legitimate contender. Witherspoon had one really good year and a bunch of average seasons but seems to be doing an ok job at one of the tougher schools to coach at. And obviously Iona now has a HOF coach after having one of the winningest coaches in MAAC.

Just take a restricted donation that was given for Yanitelli renovations and use it for something else, open the doors of the Armory and we’ll have 8000 fans, big time recruits, and power 5 schools that want to play road games against us. We’ll do that for a few years and then we’ll be where Gonzaga is. Not sure why you can’t see the blueprint for success. 😂

Just to set the record straight I attended that Rutgers game at the Armory. It was not a big crowd and no way it was 4000 probably more like 1500 or so. No bleachers they had folding chairs set up in the end zones behind the basket or otherwise upstairs gallery seating.I was lucky enough to get a seat at courtside next to the media table like they set up at Yanitelli now.I remember Dr Cornacchia and his wife attended and were sitting in the same area. Also you're wrong on Jeron Belin and Devaunte Turner. They were both JUCO transfers ,not transfers down from higher Level. Belin played 2 years of juco ball, one at Polk and one at Monroe.Turner played at a juco in Louisiana his home state up near where he lived in Monroe,I think it was Independence CC.

Hey folks, I will say this, all of you are passionate about Peacock basketball, SPU and as well as your fine historical city. I appreciate that and commend that. I certainly hope that Peacock nation will rally around this team for the 21-22 season. I checked Verbal Commits and saw that Rider Ings is transferring as well as a couple from Siena. I'm not sure if it's transfer portal ( I assume), so they may rescind that. My question, any word on potential transfers from SPU? Also, in another post it mentioned coached Sha signed an extension? Welcomed news. You folks are the best. I'll hang up and listen. Coming from the most overrated conference in the country (Big Ten), GO PEACOCKS!

Not all MAAC coaches are excellent coaches, but those that aren’t appear to be decent recruiters.. Some coaches underperform based on their roster talent but their ability to recruit outperforms other coaches in the MAAC. This past season, Sha/ SPU lost to coaches that either have better talent or matched Sha in game planning. Though I would add a qualifier that SPU had no home court advantage this season. Playing at NJCU was like playing an away game. There was little if any advantage for SPU in games played at that facility. But coaches that you don’t respect, beat us, including Monmouth, Rider, Fairfield, Quinnipiac, and Canisius. So one way or the other, these programs that you don’t respect, managed to beat us. Sometimes, roster talent can hide a coaches deficiencies. But last time I checked, recruiting was part of the coaching responsibility.
As for the Armory debate, there is no way of knowing if your opinion is the correct one. But, there is no debate about the fact that SPU has an underfunded athletic department and an administration that has not been fully committed to its success. And that is a frustration that all of us share.

Glad to read all the glowing spin. Big question for you to answer is why the announced game for the following year with SHU did not occur and was played at the Yanitelli which got about 2,000 in attendance. You have to stop making up stuff. The track was not always there, particularly in the glory days you reference. The Rutgers game was not a hidden event. Your reference of Ford explains a lot as he had disputes with the Jesuits. Right or wrong you sound just like him. Also you need to bring your numbers down as the highest attendance at the Armory happen in 1968 and did not reached your exalted number of 8000. By the way SPCFan is not an imposter. It would appear that anyone who disagrees with you is not an SPU fan. I would be willing to bet that their pocketbooks have been more wide open for the school than yours.

trueblue some very interesting comments about the Armory. I was at that Rutgers game and it was far from full bur certainly better than what we get now and the parking is certainly better. With Yanitelli hopefully opening for next season we don't want to start knocking it but we need some voices to contact Rachel and Coach Sha about getting a few games there for the coming season. One of the potential venues could be the MAAC tourney which would be far more convenient for more conference schools rather than our gypsy like existence which hasn't worked and is not convenient for most schools. When we played all of our home games at the Armory there typically were bleachers close around the perimeter of the basketball court as the lower Armory seats were some distance from the court. I don't how it could be done but getting people like the Mayor, Bob Hurley and Tom Carver involved plus our politician graduates could certainly help.It no doubt needs some more money spent to bring it more up to date but it did always have the feel of a real basketball arena.Go Peacocks.
