Game opens as a pick'em. Given the delusional fan base upstate, I expect this to go to a point or two in favor of the home team. Good chance for Loyal to pick up some cash for Valentine's day, since I believe the hungry, more rested Peacocks will prevail. Next we face the two best record teams in the MAAC,Rider then Iona.

It should be noted that some of the Peacocks' better play has been on the road with wins over Rutgers,Boston U ,Cornell, Quinnipiac, and Monmouth.

One game does not a Season make but we sure needed this win. Congrats to team and coach. Also gives me (us) a chance to debunk some of the things read recently.
1) For my friend (?) Peacock who constantly misquotes and misinterprets I still agree with Figgy's take on JD. Will be judged by his record, among other factors. As a JD supporter I understand that but IMO the guy can coach and recruit, under difficult circumstances.
2) Thank goodness for Desi waking up. Without him we lost 4 of our first 5 games by a total of 8 points. No excuses, we lost but we were and are a little snake bit. We need the "good" Desi.
3) Today we only took 10, 3 point shots out of 54 in total. Maybe JD's message which I relayed in several previous posts is getting through to the players. Clearly stated to me that he wanted his players to drive more and create. Today they did
4) All this stuff about poor offensive schemes is just bs. Prior to today's game we averaged 61 points per game and the MAAC oponents we faced averaged 62.3. How good are their offensive schemes? After today that stat will change, positively. We've scored 79. 68,68, 62, 72,63 and 69 today. Not that shabby. I also believe that none of us feel that we have maxed out our potential.
5) Yes, a coach has to take responsibility for his teams record but players also have to make plays ( as Desi and others did today ). Same offensive sets but different results! Just tired of the finger pointing on the coach. Guess Pastos will have to deal with that after today. Everything should be shared responsibility. That's what a team is all about.
6) No, I don't think we have more talent than some of the top tier teams. Even posted that before the Season began. We do have a deeper bench but note very little playing time for our role players today.
7) Still very, very worried about our foul shooting. No doubt in my mind, and others , that it cost us the second Manhattan game and possibly the Quinny game. Today, take away Desi's 5/6 and the rest of the team shot 4/9 several front ends of one and ones. It has to improve or we'll lose another close game.
8) Not especially friendly with junctionkid but I do hope that his family is OK after that terrible fire. At least he can take some satisfaction in our drubbing of Siena as I know how much he despises that Program or fan base.
As I began this post, I stated one game does not a Season make. Let's see if we can build on this, get out of the PIG and show what we can do.

Lots of love for our players, team and coach on the Siena board. The two I like best is that one Siens poster hopes that St. Peter's goes D2 so that Siena can hire JD as coach. Echoed by a few other posters. The other which I find funny and in contrast to what some of our posters observe is that the St. Peter's players play so well together that it "looks like they practice 8 hours a day "
Interesting observations from outsiders but which I don't take all that seriously... "you're never as good as you look when you are winning nor as bad as you look when you are losing". One of the truest things ever said in sports.

That old adage ........"never as good........never as bad" certainly applies here, particularly as they apply to evaluations of our coaching staff. Unfortunately, and certainly as our future fortunes are concerned, success athletically will become even more scarce as we fall further behind due to lack of funding, little emphasis, and inadequate physical resources. No one, barring the emergence of a divine presence, will change this direction. As OT has pointed out previously, look at the abysmal performances of most of our other sport's programs, most notably, the demise of a once successful women's bb program. While many here acknowledge coach Coyle's credentials and abilities, nothing she has done can overcome the impediments that exist. OT sees firsthand these conditions and has to confront the challenges they pose every day. Like most supportive fans, we identify with our players, share their struggles and accomplishments, making it difficult to admit that at times that may not perform as well as an opponent. To accept such a conclusion would then force us to accept that their talent level may not be as high. Thus, the more convenient and less depreciating answer is to blame the coaching.
Enough of the big picture. Was nice to enjoy an easy win today. Team shot well, passed effectively, and was very strong defensively, particularly in clogging the passing lanes. As counter, must acknowledge that this is a very poor Siena team. Our shooters were left wide open, and big men given plenty of room inside. Wysche had little pressure, was able to set the offense and believe had nine assists, most before the ten minute mark of the first half, no doubt because our shooters made their baskets. Uncharacteristically, we scored on a number of fast breaks and quick shots, courtesy of an ineffective and puzzling Siena press.

Fun game to watch. Always nice to win on the road in front of a large crowd. As most know game was not nearly as close as the final score.SP led by 23 with 7 minutes left then shut it down. Interesting to note Peacocks scored 30 points off 17 turnovers while Indians, excuse me, Saints, got just 5 off our 15. We had 34 points in the paint and 14 fast break points. To me the key to the game was the play of Wyche who had 9 assists and 4 steals. He was a master in the open court. For a change when the Peacocks were pressed, they finally made their opponents pay with transition baskets. Didn't like the seats as they were low behind the bench ,but all game long you could hear a voice exhorting the players to attack the hoop. Next two will be tough . I'd like at least one. Surprised at the lack of posts on this game. Or is everyone glued to their TVs watching the Pro Bowl. My momma always said"If you don't have anything nice to say ,you shouldn't say it at all". Might this board be the antithesis of that philosophy ? To Loyal---Will it be candy, flowers or perfume ?

For those who must stress the negatives even after a nice win , our soph big and point ate the lunch of the soph big and point of a program which has all the advantages over the disadvantages that the pessimists here must post about over and over again . Whether you go by the stats or by the eye , Trevis and Quadir totally outplayed Wright and Ogenyemi on both ends of the floor . Trevis has now become not only an adequate defender but a really good defender . And it was just beautiful to watch his floor game today on offense . Only two points , and he dominated the game when play was meaningful . Imagine that , a point guard dominated the game while only scoring two points . And the play of these two should , but don't reduce their bleak outlook , when we discuss the future . Quadir and Trevis , I still look foward to them as juniors and seniors getting assists to and from each other . This is also testimony to the very good recruiting job that JD and his two staffs have achieved in the face of the almost insurmountable odds that two of our posters like to obsess about even after a win . Congrats are also in order for Tyler , Desi and , Marvin , and Jamel - other players that JD has brought into the program .
When we look at the disadvantages under which the Peacocks operate , we should be at least balanced . Let's face it , we do have a few advantages . And we are talking about the MAAC , where precious few programs have MUCH better circumstances to operate under . One of those , we beat today and , except for three year period , have exceeded for a long , long time . The other might be FF . Enough said . We can never ever prove our points that are here in disagreement . Too many variables at work . But I will stand on my position that JD recruits very well . And that he comes up short in maximizing those recruits strengths and minimizing their weaknesses . But it was sure pretty to watch Trevis and Quadir play today . Oh geez , there I go again beatifying our players . Hoops gods , forgive me for being a fan .

junctionkid...I've given up on you. You are totally classless and pityfull individual. On two occasions I offered you my condolences and support on the tragedies that befell your family. Did you ever had the class to alieast say thank you? Tells me all I need to know about you.
Then you have the audacity to exaggerate what I have said much as Cindy had chasticized you a week or so ago. You say you dislike the pessimists but your post is one big backstab without provacation or any sembelence of reading comprehension. You chastize others for being negative and then you continue with your negative backstabbing of our coach. Galt obviously picked up on that. Quite frankly, I don't mind your opinion good or bad but I do object to your double standard of criticizing others while taking your own negative shots. That's a hypocrite.
Who is balanced? Today I congratulated team, players and coach. Today the players played and that is a direct POSITIVE reflection on team AND coach. Be man enouigh to say so. Also let me clue you in to a few things
1) Recruiting at St. Peter's is not easy. I've never really elaborated on that but it's a FACT. How would you know as you've never coached here? And yes we do have some advantages ( NYC for example ) but that doesn't negate the reality that all of our coaches operate under. Yet we don't moan and groan or really dwell on it. I definitely do not. I just do my job. Thus I object to your complete exaggeration of anything I have ever said in that regard. I resent you saying that untruth.
2) If I post my opinion that our "talent" is about equal to that of the Manhattan's , Rider's, Quinny's and even Monmouth's stop taking offense. I really like our players both as players and individuals but that doesn't mean that I can't give my own evaluation. And by the way my track record in that is much, much better than yours. Need I remind you again. Disagree if you want but don't phrase it as a put down of our players and their talents, it's not.
3) Stop trying to pretend that you are a supporter of our coach, you are not. Comes through in every post. But that's OK, it's your opinion but just leave it at that without your personal comments about other posters opinion. You are fond of saying that John Dunne knows more about basketball than you ever will only to criticize as if you knew more. You're right he does so stop being a hypocrite.
4) Finally Trevis and Q played great today but so did Desi, Marvin and Tyler. And our Coach did a pretty good job also or didn't you see that?
You can't even keep a promise. Said that you were never going to post again ( as jajak ) but come back as junctionkid. Then you said that you were never going to address me again but you take a clear swipe at me in your above post ( your reference to "two posters"). I told you once that I would only respond if you started. But you can't help yourself.
I sincerely offered my regards for you family situation ( twice),now I've had my fill of you. Post what you want but stop taking cheap shots and leave me out of it. You are a waste of my time.

Siena probably pressed us because other teams (Tenn St., Norfolk St., Canisius, Monmouth, Jaspers (2x) were effective against us. With a depleted roster, the Saints could not be similarly effective.
Wyche was key in the first half. It helps when we shoot 53% for the game, of course. Nine first half assists were outstanding, considering Trevis is averaging less than four per game.
A win is a win. We beat a depleted club with great resources and average coaching skills. Given the injuries suffered by the Saints, our players are much, much better.
Rider will be an interesting test. We've lost to four MAAC teams at home who are no better than us re: personnel. Split the next two, have some success with the theoretically softer part of the MAAC schedule and SPU can finish sixth or seventh.
While we'll have to play four games, SPU would be no more than a two point dog, at most, until the Final in that scenario. Certainly beats the -7 and -9 we were in 2011. Given the mess this season has been to date, SPU can still make some noise in March if things fall the right way and Desi and Marvin pick it up.
In summary, we've woefully underachieved to date this season, but, the league is extremely weak this year. A March run, given that, is not out of the question, especially since we start three seniors.

OT Key to our season is clearly to have me get angry. Everytime I do they seem to make a liar out of me. One game doesn't change my long term view, but I guess we can do a take off of the beer commercial- Stay angry my friend stay angry

figgy...can't blame you for being angry. Sign of a good fan. Also, if you remember, I agreed with your bottom line take. For me, my long term view hasn't changed either, win or lose. Let's both hope that we catch a lot of well deserved good breaks and that the team plays consistently well without those big gaps in scoring that you've pinpointed all season long. As you say, be agressive, attack the basket and make foul shots and we'll be OK.
