With the crowd still buzzing about the Vic Adams commitment, Griffs lead by 8 @ the half as Baron hits a three with five seconds left.
Nice effort by SPU on senior day, but under 40% shooting once again undermines whatever else SPU does well. Desi did not start and has missed a few wide open threes. Maybe tired?
Harold Washington, second team all-MAAC last season and an excellent two guard showing his stuff in the first half with 12 points. I forgot to list Harold as one of the five MAAC two guards better than Desi in a previous post.....bad omission on my part.
Conley more active than usual, but Manhertz is a beast and adds a dangerous inside dimension to the Griffs.
While Loyola, Niagara and Iona have been prominently mentioned as Tourney faves, great PG play and Washington give Canisius a better than punchers chance up in MA. PG play is key and Baron is very impressive (even though quiet today so far).

Beautiful left handed finish by Burke; he has 10 points today. "Came to play", says our color announcer.

As much as I appreciate how Yvonne has kept his emotions in check this year, I wouldn't blame him if he got up and decked someone today. Maybe I am missing something from watching behind a computer, but these calls appear to be total BS. Yvonne gets leveled twice on illegal screens with no calls, but two obvious flops by Canisius and they get the charge!!

Memorable two handed stuff driving down the lane for Yvon. Down 6 with a minute to go.
SPU fighting very hard, but Griffs are pretty talented. Deceptively long inside.
Griffs under 50% from the line, keeping the Peacocks alive during the second half.

Down 7 with 26 seconds to go.
Good effort on Senior Day; nothing to be ashamed of.

Back from the game. Some insights and comments.
1) Overheard the Cansius coach compliment his teams play this afternoon. His exact comment was if they had played against Loyola the way they played today, they would have won.
2) Spoke with Marlon at lenght after the game. His comment on Fields was that he was the toughest player he had seen in his 5 years in the league. Tough doesn't necessarily equate to good but the staff is counting on his play next year.
Marlon is on his way out to Denver, Thursday. to speak with another highly regarded recruit. When I asked why since all our scholarships were taken, he said that we could always redshirt someone if this particular player committed. Again, hard working staff. Hope they are not using my expense budget!
3) Agree with johngalts post. Are we already annointing Wyche over Fields, Adams over Desi and Welton over Elias??? Also forgotten about Desport, Chazz and Tucker. We are getting way, way ahead of ourselves!
4) Regarding the game
a) Desport looked pretty good rebounding in the 1st half. Still learning the American inside game but he's big ( at least 6'8"), strong, pretty athletic and young. Hope he continues to develop in the off season.
b) Chris Burke threw the prettiest touch pass that you will ever see. Brought a few gasps from the crowd. Speak with him a lot. Just doesn't quite realize how good he can be. Wish he was a Sophomore. Just beginning to be more offensive minded the last few games. Still not enough shots taken.
c) youngalum is absolutely right. The refs were horrible. Barron pushed off with his left arm all game long...not one call. Some were quite flagrant but still no call. Maybe if we start winning next year more alumni and students will fill the stands so that we may get some calls. Every game I attended felt like an away game. Gives the refs too much leeway.
d) Tucker is a natural scorer despite his defensive limitations ( hope he works on that). Not a bad option off the bench as the #4 in certain situations next year.
e) Sometimes when a team has a lot of talented players they push each other to be better. All want playing time. Should help individual development.
f) Desi did not start...no tired legs. JD started his seniors on Senior Day.
g) Shame in that we are competitive in almost every game we played this year. Just one player and many foul shots short.

Maybe stating the obvious but very apparent again that a big body who can defend and board would have provided so many benefits this year. Perimeter defense would vastly improve as guards would play more up on defenders, work passing lanes harder, gamble more on the ball, faster start on the break, etc.
Marlon might be referring to '14 as a redshirt would cost a ship. Of course we could have a defection or one of the recruits fail to qualify. Welton and Wyche I'm told are sound. J.C.'s generally only need to graduate. Hawkins claims he's qualified.

Good effort today against a team with superior size and bulk inside. Hard to overcome blatant permissiveness incompetent refs gave to Baron's left hand. Nice double double by Darius. Desport coming on in limited minutes,3 boadrs in three minutes. Burke also looked good in doing his thing. Desi.as has been his tendency lately was streaky ...2 pt first half,18 point second half. Looking ahead to next season, hoping for more consistency ,if Adams is the real deal at 6'3" and draws the bigger defender away from Desi. Very ,good summation from OT leaves little left to say . It's going to be a long off season after Springfield. I wish next season were already here.Hope springs eternal, yet you never know 'till you see 'em on the floor. Thanks again to the staff for a tireless recruiting effort.

Nice effort today by the team. Canisius was very big 3 players looked to be 6-10 or better.Baron is a hell of a player and a difference maker for them with his shooting but i also must agree with posts above the amount of leeway he got from the refs was ridiculous.
Also the blatant foul picks set by their bigs twice on Yvon and one other time on either Desi or Ffrench were ridiculous non calls.
We still managed to stay in this one all the way even taking a brief lead late at 46-45 before their size finally wore us down.
A heartfelt thanks to all the seniors from all 15 of us as Loyal says for all their efforts.I for one always appreciate the men who represent us when they wear the blue and white.

Since I will not see Peacocks live again this season, here's what I think-- They are well coached and prepared, they really try hard--they are just not very good. Too slow, too weak, too small I look for more speed from new guards and more athleticism from new bigs. All this talk of who is going to play where is just poppycock. I hope we go 12 deep and lose people for lack of opportunity. Of course JD would wind up in coronary care unit. We will likely find warts on all new blood and need to mix and match as always. Franklt I would love to see 5 new guys beat out all the returnees and create a situation where our rotation players this year and down thew bench next. Then a real talent upgrade would have been achieved. Don't hold your breath, but a deeper better roster is a reasonable expectation. Can't say the staff hasn't worked really hard to improve team-they have if all that's here is true. Staff worked really hard with this team too, they just weren't good enough-simple. God willing I'll be back behind the bench next year rooting hard and hoping for the best

Sorry about hijacking the thread.....combination of a long flight from Costa Rica and a senior moment.....funny how everyone kept posting on it....anyway, mea culpa. Now regarding the game....as posted before, nothing to be ashamed about and I'm proud of our effort.... we just lost to a better team. As depressed as I am about this season, I think next year's recruits offer some encouragement and I hope they play as well as they look on paper. Last, but not least the cupboard isn't totally bare and we have some good players coming back to compliment the new recruits.. Anyway, I'm cautiously optimistic about next year.

I too, look forward to the promise of next season and it can't come soon enough, despite the fact that it means we'll all be another year older. However, since that is still a good eight months away ,I see no reason to write off the the remainder of this season. This years guys, despite what some have suggested have not quit so why should we? We still have the bracket buster, two tough games upstate, and the PIG. SP certainly has the ability to win a PIG game and could even surprise a team looking ahead in the quarter finals. It's happened vs FF in the semis two years ago and once during the Keekee era when we top league champion Manhattan in the semis. Agreed that this years team has not lived up to our expectations. And it is true that is simply a lack of bullets in the guns, but win or lose,I still love following the Peacocks.Take yesterday's game. Who could not love Yvon's steal and thunderous dunk, reminiscent of the Perdue game,Desi's frenetic flurry of threes to take us into the lead, or Darius' giving up his body time after time? I love going to see the Peacocks. I enjoy sitting and sharing the game experience with Joe,and Pete, and John and all the others. A bad day at a Peacock game is better than a good day at work. And better days are ahead.

Echo Cindy's post. Wouldn't be the least surprised if we won a game or so at MAAC's. Also enjoyed sitting with the above mentioned fans, including Cindy. Lots of fun and very knowledgeable guys. Same is true for figgyprez who sits across the way...another good guy who knows his basketball.
Understand that travel distance keeps others away but appreciate that they root as hard as we do.
Just a word on recruiting. We all hope the new recruits help take us to another level and make us top tier and competitors for the MAAC Championship. The rule of thumb, however, for coaches is if 50% or so of any particular class has impact then that recruiting class was successful. Hope we do the same or better.
While it became obvious this year that we did not have the "horses" I feel that it's incorrect to say that last year's class was a total flop. Would anyone not recruit Chazz or Elias if they were available this year? I certainly would have recruited both of them. Jackson, a big disappointment.
Elias, for me, holds great potential. Tall (at least 6'8"), strong and getting stronger, athletic and can shoot on the wing a bit. He's also quite young (not the Iona, Glover age type). Needs to learn how to play inside which he is not use to. Yet looking more comfortable pushing, shoving, rebounding and holding his own underneath against Manhattan, Siena and Cansius. Summer play and maturity should help him big time.

In retrospect we probably would have been better if we had brought Jack Hill back as opposed to Jackson who gave us nothing with the last spot.
Also i agree especially on Elias i see potential for a lot of upside. On Chas he needs to get some confidence to take his shot when he has it.
Last year's class won't be fully evaluated until we see what Fields and Dominique especially bring to the table.
