Maybe not the only reason, but it's a BIG first reason. Hard to compete when you see numbers like this.
We can only hope, but there are high schools in NJ that field bigger teams.

And high school athletic department's support staffs often dwarfs ours. Amazing how we are surviving at all!
Good point spcfan. The irony is that the Administration really thinks that they are supportative of athletics. The disconnect has been there for years, if not decades.

Monmouth University today announced they are moving for football only to the Big South Conference.Higher level of competition, more scholarships awarded and automatic bid for conference winner into the Div 1AA tournament.
In the NEC i believe they had a 30 scholarship limit. I think the Big South allows the full complement of scholarships 70 permissable in 1AA.
Impressive move considering the travel costs with Big South teams mostly in Virginia and North Carolina except for Stony Brook out on Long Island.Monmouth made the commitment to upgrade athletics years ago and now the entire university has been affected, just look at how much their reputation has come up in US News College Rankings.
Shows what can be done with real leadership and vision plus commitment.

Maybe we called Vic Adams collect? Probably not...I think the staff was given Obamaphones as part of the stimulus package.

However, they didn't really have a choice with football. After they left the NEC to join the MAAC they figured they would continue with fb in the NEC as an associate member. The NEC voted to not allow them as an associate, leaving Monmouth without a fb home. Big South was basically the only conference left where they could find a home

Newspapers down here are portraying it as a big upgrade and frankly it is. The difference in the scholarships given and the travel budget all of which will impact their bottom line is impressive to me.
If this were SPC in basketball and the MAAC threw us out with no other conference available at the same level we could go to close by the administration would just drop out of D1 rather than make the increased commitment. Look at the budget figures above. Tell me how Canisius i/m/o similar situation to us funds at the level they do.
I'm the first to agree it's not all money and facilities only, but i'm frankly awfully tired of seeing SPU always at the bottom of the barrel.
