Alex Cline reporting SPU has landed a commitment from a 6'7" power forward. Plays for Mount Zion Academy in MD, a prep school. Saw a few video highlights......who knows, but seems to have pretty impressive size and jumping ability. Was being "recruited by" Siena and UMBC.

Comes from good programs. If 6'7'' playing at that level should be a good get

Encouraging news....Hawkins is listed as a long athletic player who runs the court well and finishes above the rim. Sounds good on paper and looks impressive in videos, but we have seen this before, only to be dissapointed at a later date. Personally, based on what I've read and heard, he sounds like the real deal and a very good get. With 6'8" Welton, 6'7" Hawkins, 6'7" Dominique and 6'7" Desport we are starting to get some decent size. Just hope they can live up to their billings.

Now we have several players who have the "potential" to be a force inside. Darius, who I love, is, at 6'6" tops is basically a power forward who has had to play center. Has done a great job but basically alone and sometimes overmatched.
Let's see how these guys develop, including Elias. Think his upside is huge...we'll see.

Our frontcourt should be set for the next two years with the three newbies, Desport, and Tucker. (Not including Burke because now hopefully he shifts full time to the 3). As eport points out, at least we now have the size to be competitive up front. Now it's time to get some shooters...

A bit more size yes, but please, let us not indulge ourselves into believing we will have more talent. Others may wish to convince otherwise simply for advancing anagenda that the staff is not producing.up to expectations, i.e., talent level.
Our difficulty is not in identifying talent but rather, in our ability to close on this talent. Perhaps it is the selling skills of our staff or, just maybe, the tools and resources they have to work with? I could name over the past several years at least 20 kids, prime targets lost, that are now impact players at other schools. Again no disrespect to our recruits....just might want to look at other schools, if any, that make similar offers to these kids. This is reality. Unfortunately there are some who would have you believe, innocently or otherwise, that a talent appraisal is in some way an attack on a kid's person or character. The fair and sound-minded here know this is not the case and, based on what can be observed, recognize we have some of the finer student-athletes in college bb.
Again, we can hope that some of the likely eight new faces next year will surprise and make a solid contribution. This is reasonable and what makes us a loyal but sometimes not the most objective group of evaluators. Just my wish that we don't raise levels to the extent that, when things don't go as hoped for, we begin to sour and blame those on the sideline or on the court rather than the circumstances for our predicament. Finally, a thank you to the Seniors for their hard work and dedication.

Not a lot known on this kid but the key at our level and with our limited resources over the years appears to be getting the right kid who can be taught and coached up to make the team competitive overall. Look at schools like Boise State in football,Butler,VCU,Gonzaga in basketball, they rarely get the top level talent in the country respectively but they coach them up to compete at the highest level with the big boys of the NCAA. Development of the guys you identify and get is at least one third of the equation, other two thirds are x's and o's and getting the right jimmies and joe's who have some talent and can be worked with.

No attempt to counter Galt's need to say little or nothing in as many words as he can conjure up, The kid had an offer from UMBC and some interest from Siena. He was classified as having a low D1 interest. That is neither negative or positive. His Lake Clifton team won the state championship his senior year, and his Mt Zion team lost to a strong Massanutten (Va.) Military Academy who boast many D1 commits to higher level schools. Hawkins was the high score with 27 point in that game. Want to read the comments go to dmvelite.com/news/massanutten-vs-mt-zion-evaluations

I guess Hofstra getting Williams would also not be a negative or a positive. Talk about saying nothing.

As with most, I don't put too much credence until the player takes the court for SP. Reading the write up provided, Hawkins seems like a 6'7" version of Chris Burke. More of a slasher than shooter, athletic, long and good defensive player etc.
Would also not be upset by the comment that he is a low D1 prospect because that's exactly what we are.
spcfan's points are well taken re: development. Yet most coaches,on any level, would love to have 50% of their recruits pan out. Whether Hawkins will be one of those is the question.
Bottom line...still need a another shooter

OT, good analogy.....he does look like a 6'7" Burke on his videos. If Burke were 6'7", he would be a very special MAAC player. Hawkins looks like a really good pickup (stats vs. good competition) with a lot of upside a few years down the road. Vic Adams and we'll be (relatively) all set.

Good point about game changer/shooter. The real question, however, is can we get one. Would be quite a coup if someone like Victor Adams committed. Long shot but anything is possible.
No question we have "good gets" but none are automatic impact players in the league...and an impact player is what every team shoots for.
