Interesting. All but one of about 35 baskets on this clip were made within 3 feet of the hoop. Good stregnth and body control; very good finisher, nice handle; quick hands. Tough to judge whether J'von can drive and make layups against taller players at the MAAC level without the threat of an outside jump shot. Civilian recommendation: take 250 jump shots per day, until further notice. :>) Here's hoping Coach has a keen eye on how J'von's game may translate.

The possibility that Reid is leaving bothers me. Reid, Lampley, Mumford, Hogga,...there's a pattern here. Is JD recruiting players who can't contribute just to fill spots on the bench? Is he promising more than he deliver? Why are so many leaving after the freshman year? It doesn't seem to me that other MAAC teams are losing players at this rate.
It's possible that the many defections are just the result of unusual circumstances, but I worry that there is something in the way JD handles his players that is wrong.

Players that remain appear to be a cohesive, happy unit. There are reasonable explanations for those who left, including Lampley who was a non basketball issue. Check out all who have left Manhattan, including most recent big loss of Chris Smith.

I will certainly take your word for it, you're a lot closer to the program than I am....but no team in the MAAC has consistently lost players at the end of their freshman year like St Pete's.

Of John's recruiting classes, I only count Hogga, and likely Mumford, as two that have left the program for non-academic causes. Check first year entrants (including transfers, JC's), and Iona, Canisius, and Manhattan have all had greater defections, with Siena, Niagara, Marist, Loyola, and Fairfield, all about the same. Don't know where you're getting your numbers from. You've got two kids, one paying his own way, biding time, attending all the home games, sitting on the sidelines and waiting their turn to join the program next year.

Lampley also left for non-academic reasons and he was asked to leave. Of course not SPC or Dunne's fault. Most of Dunne's issues come from the Leckie recruits, some, academics, some, other issues. No need to rehash them but quite a few have left the program for whatever reason.

There's more on Yvon Raymond at NJHoops.com. I don't have access. What's the gist of the story?

According to interview , he first wished to go away but then decided he wanted family to have opportunity to see him play . Said he was offered by Morehead St and had interest from a few others . Also said he was impressed by Dunne and Morton . According to Raymond , they said he will get lots of minutes and have chance to start . He sees himself as combo guard who could play 1,2 or 3 but mainly a three . He said 6'3" ,187 . He also said he sees himself as slasher who needs to improve J . From the interview , he seems like high quality young man .

His highlight reel performance reminded me a bit of Jamar Hunter in his first two seasons....quick and strong to the hole, good defender whose immediate impact at SPC was mitigated by lack of a jumper. J'von is three inches taller than Jamar. Jamar worked very hard and had good range on his jumper by the time he was a senior, making him very effective.....carrying SPC to the final of the 1999 MAAC Tourney and playing a monster final game in a losing effort vs. Siena. Seems to me if J'von develops a jump shot, he will have lots of upside. Certainly, it seems J'von has a good chance to be in the top 8 rotation right away and shoud represent an improvement over rotation spots 6 through 8 of last year.

By the way, it's Yvon, not J'von.

My guess and some reports suggest that Raymond will need at least a year to adjust to an outside game. The college game will not permit him to play the style of game he has played in hs. He is athletic and hopefully can make the adjustment. Doesn't have to be a 3-point shooter, just someone that can pull up for the 15'-18' shot. This is more learning technique than employing natural instinct, and thus harder to adjust.

Probably a very nice player and I hope a good kid, but I doubt that he will make much of a difference at least next year. Without implying that that the staff writers at the Star-Ledger know anything but Yvon couldn't crack any of the first three " All Prep" teams. Does anyone know if he received any All Essex County honors?
