I have been a frequent visitor to this forum, and an infrequent poster. With all of the insight and knowledge everyone has, I have to ask the question. Will our athletics, particularly our hoops team survive? I have the utmost respect for the knowledge and insight of everyone here, and I am asking the question with all seriousness. As an alum, the current status of the BBall team is disappointing to say the least. I was a student at SPC during the Tommy Best, Shelton Gibbs, Leonard Hayes, Darren Rowe, kevin Boyle years. I can vividly remember Yanitelli sold out for the Steve Burt/Gary Springer Iona game in 84. The community was involved. There were many other games over those years that were just like it. I have since relocated to Monmouth County, and I returned to Yanitelli last year for a game and was sorry to see that nothing in that building has changed in 30 years. I cant hold Dunne entirely accountable. It must be impossible to recruit with these facilities. Its even harder to try to watch a game there. If you find a parking spot, you have the wood bleachers to contend with. NJIT and MU building state of the art facilities will only take away from potential recruiting. Does SPC just not have the money? Or just don't want to invest in athletics. I must say that every time I head to MU to catch a game, I am jealous. There was a time not too long ago when Monmouth couldn't compete with us and now it appears as if it is only a matter of time before we cant compete with them. WHat does the future hold for us? Are their any recruits or transfers that we can get excited about? Are there any plans to upgrade the facilities? In today's age, can we continue to exist with what we have and not be the doormat of the conference? The state of the union is not good.

Truth is the administration knows something needs to be done with the facilities but haven't made a commitment to athletics in gereneral or the program. Our best funded program basketball is the lowest funded in the MAAC by far and also has the lowest recruiting budget in the MAAC by far.
I too fear as time goes on we will not be able to compete with Monmouth and if they ever gain admittance to the MAAC we will not be competitive with NJIT as well. Right now NJIT needs a league and its pretty obvious they're building that facility to make them attractive to a conference.
Rumors are Tom McMahon when he led the campaign to build the student center was told athletics would be the next project. That promise to date has not been honored. The administration pays lip service to athletics but continues to underfund all programs in the department. As old-timer has pointed out look at the performance of all sports across the spectrum in the commissioners cup.
The current president appears to be a caretaker lacking vision for whats needed. Unlike MU and NJIT who both realize the investment in athletics pays dividends for your school in so many other ways attracting attention, free publicity, students, excitement among alumni fueling donations etc.
I know the administration visited the Monmouth facility and came away feeling it was past the scope of what SPU could do.Many here would hope we could get a new facility similar is size to LIU 2000-2500 as that would seem sufficient for our current circumstances.
I doubt theres another school in the conference where a 9 year winning percentage of 36 percent means you survive as head coach but at SPU finances dictate that things work differently then anywhere else in the athletic universe.Look at the way they handled the women program basically allowing Stephanie DeWolfe to run the program completely into the ground as an absentee coach and even when her contract was up they waited until late June to move her out thereby condemning the new coach to a lengthy rebuilding process which has started now in her second year with 3 frosh starters.
In your critique of the game day experience at Yanitelli one of the things that is most galling is the fact they won't open the doors on the parking lot side of the building making fans walk completely around the building up the hill in many times frigid and windswept conditions. The only explanation i can seemingly get for same is they don't want to pay anyone to guard that side of the building.Hard to believe things are that petty but gives you an insight into the state of affairs and mindset of the institution.
Another look into the soul of the administration look at the disaster in the handling of the internet video and radio this year. At least when the games were on redone the feed was excellent. Now we have seen many games with breakdowns in both the video and audio feeds of the games

Loved article in today's Ledger about state of State U athletics- specifically men's bball. Hard to recruit at RU, lack of facilities yatta yatta yatta. Seems reporters mistakenly interviewed some of us SPU posters

I heard RU wants no part of us next year. Maybe they know something we don't know.
