Happy to get away, for a day anyway, from our basketball discussions. Obviously, while there is not as much overall interest in golf we do have our fans and everyone at St. Peter's wants a winner, so here's the outlook for this Season:
The Conference, like basketball, is very evenly balanced. The top teams will be Fairfield, Monmouth, Iona, Siena and perhaps Canisius. Think we have a leg up on all of them except possibly Fairfield. The Championship will again be held at the Disney, Magnolia Course and will be webcast on ESPN 3. Fairfield has last year's individual Champion and that of the year previously. However, my top 4 players can compete with anyone and each capable of winning the MAAC Championship individually. That is our strength. I believe that we have the best 1-4 players in the league, with two experienced Seniors. My problem is finding a 5th player. Tournament golf is playing 5 players but counting the 4 best scores. The value of a 5th player is to post one or two countable scores in orded to pick up another player who might have had a poor day. Difficult to play 3 outstanding rounds for any player thus a 5th could be the difference maker.
If this past Fall is any indication as to how we will perform this Spring, things look good. After a mediocre start we ended the Fall at the UConn Tournament and our 6th place finish out of 15 top team and saw us finish ahead of every MAAC competitor, including Fairfield, by several shots. Think we sent the message that we are the defending Champions.
Began the Season with a Team Meeting, Wednesday and the entire team committed themselve to outwork every team in the league. So next week we begin indoor practice in the upstairs net and have scheduled both cardio, stretching and some weight training. We have several Tournaments, including our own Peacock Invitationa;, prior to the Conference Championships which is the last week in April.
On the recruiting front I've recruited two pretty good players from the South Jersey/Philadelpia area. Both have pretty extensive resumes including the Philadelphia Player of the Year and a Tournamet victory over 50 players last week in Hilton Head South Carolina. Should keep the Program at they high level it's been at these past several years.
Thanks to everybody foe rooting. Any small donations ($25 -$100) would be appreciated. Please either use the Peacock Nation form or mail to the Athletic Department. Be sure to indicate Golf Team or the contribution will be lost "in the cloud".
