Thought I would post something about our golfers performance in the several Major Tournaments they have competed in this Summer. Not a bad time to post this as the basketball news is on hold until perhaps the John Murray Golf Outing August 11th. I will be away but Cindy and spcfan are ususlly in attendance.
First, with regard to our prospects for next year (we play both in the Fall & Spring) repeating as MAAC Champions will be our goal. Don't know what the other Teams have as yet but I do know that Monmouth University will be very tough. In addition to their #1 player who finished 2nd individually inthe MAAC last year Coach Shea recruited two potentially outstanding players. While Monmouth should be our main competition I still have to like our chances of repeating.. This Summer, all our players have committed to moving their game to the next level by entering major events min the Tri-State area and across the country. The results, to date, have been outstanding.
1) Eric Edmunds finished in a tie for 1st place in the Syracuse Post Standard Tournament. The Post Standard is considered the premier event in that area. Eric shot 71, 74, 76, 68 to tie for first. He lost in a playoff to a player who has been the two time Michigan State Amateur Champion. Eric continued his excellent play by being the #1 qualifier, out of his section , for the NYS Amateur ( there are at least 6 other qualifying sites throughout NYS) after shooting 5 under 67.
2) Brian Grubbs competed in the 4 State Match Play Tournament out West. Brian was the lead qualifier and was seeded #1 in the Event. Brian then won all four of his matches to win the Championsjip. Along the way he defeated a former Univ. of Colorado player and in the 36 hole final defeated a HS phenom who was recruited by the #1 D2 school in the Country.
3) Nick Dilio recently just finished 7th in the prestigous IKE Championship that also had several qualifying sites just to get into the Tournament. The final field was full of the best players in the Tri-State Area including many college players. Nick shot 71, 77, 68 at Montclair CC. Nick also finished top 10 in the NYC Amateur. Later this week Nick tries to qualify for the US Amateur..
Those are my top three players and taken as a group are the best in our Conference. However, in College Golf Tournaments 5 players participate and a Teams top 4 scores count. A winning team needs to be strong throughout the lineup. Rising Sophomore Dominic Diaz, who had an outstanding Freshman season, also has played well this Summer. In qualifying for the NJ State Amateur Dom was the lead qualifier from his area also shooting under par. Dom is playing in as many events as he can this Summer and is consistently posting scores in the low to mid 70's.
Looking to compete for our teams final spot are Brandon Molson, Sean Trainor, Steven Competiello and Rich Jakubowski. Each has played well in the Tournaments they have entered and each knows that in order for the team to repeat we need to be strong #1- #5. Since the MAAC Championship is held in the Spring I intend to use our Fall Tournament Schedule to give each player a chance to contribute. Will always play my top 3/4 but I need to find that 5th man.
Sorry, if I bored anyone but there was so much support for our team last Spring that I wanted to keep those who follow us updated.
