Good news and Bad news....First with the good news. As posted previously Nick Dilio qualified to play in the Met Open @ Seawane CC in Long Island shooting a 1st. place 65 (67? ). There were several qualifying sites around NY, NJ and Conn. Well the 54 hole 106th Met Open opened today at the Hudson National GC with a quaifying field of close to100 plus players. That field consisted of not only the best players ( mainly pro's ) in the Met Area. Several of those pros have played on the regular Tour while others played on the Champions Tour. I can name at least a dozen of those "name" players.
Well Nick opened with a 68 ( -2) good enough to be in a tie for 7th with two rounds to go. No matter how Nick fares he has come a long, long way this year and has the potential to get even better. A lot depends luck and consistency but Nick has that potential. Also in the Tournament are my former players Michael Winter and David Powers. Few other Colleges/Universties have that representation in the Field. Speaks well for our former Program and the players who're part of our Championship Teams.. The Met Open, by the way, is still considered one of the best in the Country. Names like Hogan and Sarazen are still on that Trophy.
Now the bad news. Looks like our Current Golf Coach has quit. Found out through one of my players father tonight. Explains a lot but I'll follow the old adage that if you have nothing to say, say nothing at all....just terrible ! I'm going to call our AD tomorrow to help the team survive with the 1st Tournament only a week away. Maybe I can help get someone to Coach. The individual team members are lost. See what I can do.

Nick just completed Round 2 shooting 71. Fell only a few spots from 7th to 11th but only one shot out of 8th and a few out of the top 5. Nice showing by Nick in a field of well over 100golfers who had to qualify earlier this month just to get a spot in the Tournament.
Looking at Nick's scorecard, seems that he had 3 bogies which he needs to cut down on if he is to continue to successfully pursue his dream. Mike Winter also played well but missed the "cut" at the top 50 by a few shots. Keep improving Mike as you are blessed with a 'putting" talent. Just need to give yourself more opportunities by hitting the ball closer to the hole.
On another note I have a call into Rachelle Paul and Katie Accuri. Hope to speak with them tomorrow to see how I can help straighten out the Golf Program situation

Can’t say if you were ever the best coach or the best recruiter but don’t know of anyone who ever cared more for his athletes. Keep up the good fight and spirit in spite of all the apathy you face.

Nick shoots final round 72 ( plus 2 ) and 211 ( plus 1 ) for the entire Tournament. Good for 15th place but only 2 shots out of 6th place which was at 209. Great playing by Nick showing that he belongs among the top pro's and amateurs in the Tri-State Area. His future looks bright.
On another note, I've called our AD twice, as have some parents, but have only received some voicemail promises to return calls. Not too upset as I know what they have to do this week and next to get all our Athletes eligible to play this Fall. I've also reached out to a former player of mine ( now an Assistant Golf Pro in NJ ) who is also willing to help. Have a feeling that it's a big, big job ahead. Will see what happens next week and will keep all informed.
Not trying to brag about Golf as Basketball is by far our #1 Sport but the Golf Team thanks to former Assistants Chris Merce, Nick Dilio. Ray Ferrari and ,most of all , our fine players has been our most successful Program over the last 10/15 years....3 MAAC Championships and 3 Individual MAAC CHAMPIONS plus much more. Very worthy of support.

Thanks spcfan. Think it's a bigger mess than anyone realizes. Forget about the Coaching end. It's the scheduling, recruiting, ordering of equipment ( golf ball, bags, shirts etc.)that takes a lot of work. Moreover, finding places to practice will be a big, big challenge. Add to that Spring Training for next year which was supported by our Peacock Invitational AND our parents at little cost to the Athletic Departments budget. I could go on and on but I think you and others can understand what a big project this will be.I wish everyone luck in salviging a once outstanding Program. Not trying to blame anyone since as the next Coach will soon find out that it's not a part time job or commitment. To be positive....it can be done !

Thanks dreamweaver and others. While the current situation is tough we do have a core of returning golfers that could easily place us in mid-pack and with a little bit of luck and recruits we can be back on top in a year or so. Remember, that last year we only had 5/6 players or so on our Roster and, due to COVID we weren't eligible to compete in the MAAC Championships last Spring. The only Team not able to do so.
As stated, it can be done but we need to start soon. Still waiting to hear from the Athletic Department. Understand that they are very busy these two weeks and working with a depleted staff but let's get started.
