Beginning a new job, every manager needs to have someone on board in the organization he/she can trust implicitly. In this case, given the state of SPU athletics post-Elliot and the historical lack of support from above, it was even more important. Can we really have expected Boe to promote from within a department crying out for change or hire someone she did not know?
So Debbie may not have the optimal resume. Point is, she is capable of doing the job and would be unquestionably loyal to Boe. As anyone who has assumed the role of managing a troubled organization knows, having a subordinate on the team who can be trusted is a far more important factor than hiring the perfect candidate.
Criticize Boe if you want, but please choose a better example when doing so.

Criticize Boe if you want, but please choose a better example when doing so. Fair enough. But those loyal to Boe, will more than likely be shown the door. If I was Debbie I would start looking for other options. Why would a new AD want to keep the loyal people to Boe? You must agree the new AD will replace Debbie, correct? Because he or she will need the same thing "unquestionably loyal(ity)". Not just Debbie but Frank and Chris were Boe hires, meaning you need to replace, them correct? Highly doubtful. Under Elliot, Quinlan, and Boe there were very few administrators, if any, shown the door when the new AD took over. Musil may be the only one and with the info I know, it is one of the few areas I agree with Hague on his opinion of Boe. His paragraphs about the banners and taking down tradition look pretty foolish now after Boe worked to put up banners that are 10x better looking. There was a whole other thread discussing the article when it came out so no need to discuss again. Also, you make it sound like Boe fired someone to make room for Debbie. The position had been vacant all summer and Boe had someone she wanted to bring in to fill it. Wouldn't any manager rather bring in someone they're familiar with that they know will do a good job than a complete outsider? I don't disagree that if there was a complete unbiased search, she wouldn't have been hired as a Sr Assoc AD, but that doesn't mean that she is not capable of doing the job. She has shown that she is. I doubt the new AD will want to get rid of half the administrative staff (who have proven very capable in their roles) and worry about filling those positions for several months with everything else that will be on their plate. As loyal said, go ahead and criticize Boe but it seems like you're barking up the wrong tree going after Debbie. Degregorio was the much more questionable hire.

Sorry, loyal and peacockpride but this is one of the reasons that I've chosen not to post. Takes too long and not worth the time to write all my long paragraphs correcting the inaccuracies, lies and innuendoes posted here by calialum. My guess is that he is a disgruntled individual, probably one of those dismissed. Clearly an individual who can't let things go. Remember a previous post of mine where Boe received a package several months ago containing a bag of s**t? What type of disturbed individual would do that?
I will keep my word and get on with more important things but will keep reading the Board as we have pretty good and intelligent posters. Mostly good stuff! However, I post this ONE time to defend, or more accurately, to set the record straight about Debbie Gregory who I respect very much. She is a straight shooter and IMO the best person that we could have for our Finance person. She's good at what she does.
To correct the above Debbie came in to replace Maria who was also very good but once Maria received Masters from SP, Maria decided to move on for a position at Rutgers. So Debbie was brought in to fill an open position. No one was fired. I do not know Debbie's salary but it definitely did not double, not even close. In fact, as part of Boe's attempt to improve Athletics ALL Administrators were given slight salary increases. across the Board. Part of Boe's plan to have full time Coach's. Debbie was given a new title but so was almost everyone else in the Athletic Department. You didn't mention that!
To continue with Debbie, and with respect to Maria, Debbie is the best person that I could imagine in her Finance position...she is very, very good. Almost anal about every expense expenditue in terms of being receipted. Also has and is spearheading great ideas such as an American Express card for each coach and new rules for cell phone expenses that had gotten out of control. Debbie has also been an advocate for getting Coach's and teams reimbursed for expenditures in a timely manner. She has spearheaded new procedures AND made sure that the Finance Department ( up the hill) was kept on it's toes. Corrected their mistakes in several instances. Oh, and by the way, she is there for every basketball home game managing ticket sales and staying late.
If I sound pissed off, I am. To bad mouth someone who is so compitent is disgraceful. I can only guess again that it's done by someone who has problems. Just felt that I had to post to defend someone who could not defend herself.
As far as that other "stuff"it would take many pages to correct the inaccuracies posted. I just hope that our Peacock fans understand that most of this is bs. I will cite only one example which I posted several times. Coach Massone and Coach Pissante were dismissed for serious cause. I liked both personally so I will say no more.. However, I will say this...the ultimate decission to dismiss was not made by Boe but by Human Resources and our Provost who investigated the situation thoroughly. Any other rational person would have made the same decision. It's just a lie to repeat that Boe came in just to clean house. She was faced with a situation that could not be tolerated, by anyone! In fact, just to put icing on that cake, Joe Quinlan faced the same situation and had to go to Human Resources, himself, regarding at least one of the aforementioned Coach's. I'll leave it at that.
A word to calialum. Let it go! I really don't want to get into washing dirty laundary in public. You took an unfair shot at Debbie Greggory, not only a good person but very, very compitent So I responded. giving as little inside information as I could. And I do know more. Boe is gone and Debbie is a terrific asset to athletics. She didn't deserve your attempt to trash.
PS You know who I am but you hide behind a posting name. Tell us who you are...just takes guts!

As loyal said, go ahead and criticize Boe but it seems like you're barking up the wrong tree going after Debbie. Degregorio was the much more questionable hire. Sure, they're capable but what happened being loyal. The new AD will want his or her own right hand man/women, too, right? The position was available as Assistant AD of Business, not Sr. Assoc AD of Business. That is 100% a fact. Why was the position suddenly changed to a Sr. Assoc AD when posted as Assistant AD of Business? I'm sure they would want a right hand man but that does not mean it would need to come at the expense of a current employee. Elliot and Quinlan worked with the staff that was employed when they got here. Boe was lucky that she had someone in mind and that position was currently vacant so it made it easy. Again, you're looking at the wrong person to make your example. Degregorio had a position created specifically for him by Boe. Why was the title changed? It's simple, because Boe wanted to bring in Debbie and wanted to give her a senior title and pay her more to get her here. I was told by someone that is usually very accurate that in one of Boe's first staff meetings she mentioned that she had someone very qualified that she wanted to bring in and was working with HR to get her a salary to get her to come to SP- that turned out to be Debbie so Boe had her in mind from day one. I don't know how much higher that salary was from the assistant AD job that was posted, but I'm sure it had to be at least enough to cover Debbie's expenses to commute to SP. Its the same thing with recruiting - identify someone you want, figure out what gets them to your program, make that happen. If you think Debbie was a bad selection then that's fine, but you have yet to give any example of why she was a bad hiring other than "her resume doesn't scream Sr Assoc AD." Once you get to a job, your resume means nothing and its your performance that matters. From everyone I've spoken to her performance has been up to par.

peacockpride....your original point about Debbie having 17 years of experience is right on target. My only correction is with those who say that her performance has been "up to par". In my opinion her performance has been exceptional. How do I know this? Can't get everything that I ask for...just kidding about that! Also impresses me that Debbie is keeping our so called Finance people "up the hill" on their toes. Has corrected them on more than one occassion. IMO not all of Boe's hires have been great but this one was a home run. What a shame for someone who is seemingly so involved or fixated on Boe choose to bad mouth others who can't defend themselves and by being anonymous.
