Interested in Cindy and others take on the game, especially if you were there. Here are my strong feelings.
#1 Very encouraged about our prospects for the season. Barring key injuries ( and that's a big if) this team will be very, very competitive in the MAAC. Hard to compete when your opponents shoots 68% from the field in the second half and was pretty good from the foul line. Game turned around early in the 2nd half when we lost the ball on a drive to the basket, a team technical was called and a potentential tie game turned into a 6 point deficit. Following that were two blocking call, made by the same referree who called the T's, that, to me were obvious charges. Sitting behind JD heard him yell at ,the ref "that's two in a row where my player had position and his feet planted". Coach was upset. Bottom line, however, is that we played well but couldn't ovecome the Hall's 2nd half shooting.
Some observations on the players:
1) Darius - played a great game and hit almost every 12' he took. A natural power forward, one can only wonder how he would fare on a Big East type of team who played him at forward.
2) Desi - a non factor until garbage time. As posted previously, Desi needs to assert himself more on offense. In his defense, threw some beautiful passes and was overplayed all day in the Seton Hall zone with their 6'5" player with long arms overplaying Desi's side. Desi has the talent and is only a Soph....no worries here.
3) Blaise - has become the real deal. Amazing what a dose of confidence has done for his game.
4) Jackson - showed me something today. Very good defensive player and works hard at it all game long. Made a few good offensive moves and thus removed my anxiety as to how he'll fare in MAAC play.
5) Desport - as strong as he is looked small compared to the Seton Hall monsters. Hit a deep 3 but, as posted pre-season, needs to develop an inside game. Has little or no moves inside. Will need to develop that part of his game. Good news is that he looks comfortable on the court...no fear. Good for a freshman.
6) Chazz - always knew that he could drive to the basket and could shoot some but 3/4 from 3 point range was impressive. Even more impressive was his man to man defense. Picked up his man at half court and had the other player visibly nervous. Long arms and quick feet.
Bottom line is that while we took a beating in the second half we have some very good athletes and players.
PS Darius looked fine in the game but he went down in a lot of pain. Have no idea how serious but he was on his feet for the shake hands line but with sneaker in hand.
