See if I can give our loyal fans some preliminary information on our AD search. Found out this morning that the search has been narrowed to 3 individuals out of 75 applicants. Next week each of the 3 finalists will go thru a series of interviews. First by the search committee, next by the coaches and athletic administrators followed by the Provost and finally the Board of Trustees. A complete day will be devoted to each applicant.
The finalists are Gerald "Jay" DeFruscio, Travis Tellitocci and Belinda "Boe" Pearman. I have not seen, as of yet, a resume on each. If any of our members are in the "googling" mood or know anything about each of the 3 candidates please inform as I want to prepare specific questions for each. Also feel free to comment on any of the finalists. Should be interesting!
On another note the Frank Darby the legendary St. John's golf coach who was "let go" at St. John's last January ( only rumors as to why ) has been hired to be the new Manhattan Golf Coach replacing Jerry Wood. Jerry was a great guy, pretty good golfer who donsated his salary back to Manhattan. Jerry was a high level Morgan Stanley executive who gave his all but probably realized how big a time committment coaching D1 golf was. Don't know Darby very well but had one or two slightly unpleasant experiences. Asked if Saint Peter's could participate in the nationally known St. John,s hosted Fall Tournament, Darby was quite dismissive of our team....bothered me. Maybe he'll be a great guy when I meet him but priminary impresssion was "big ego". Let's see! One final note, similar to our basketball teams all-time record against Duke ( 2/0 ) the golf team is also 2/0 vs St. John's. In 1964 our undefeated golf team defeated St. John's in a big upset reported in the NY Times. Then last Spring ( Darby was no longer coach ) we defeated them in our own Peacock Invitational. Their new coach, Mal Galetta Jr. , is a great guy. He did invite us to their Fall Event this year but we had already committed to the Rutgers Invitational and had to decline.
This years outlook....3 new players to replace our graduates but if things progress as planned we will be in the top tier again, possibly top seed.
Back to the AD's job. Any information will be helpful.
