Just wanted to add to the websites reporting on our Golf Teams perfprmance @ Towson. Team finished 11th out of a field of 23 teams. Finished one behind Navy, two behind Colgate and three behind Rutgers...every shot counts! Key, however, was finishing better than our MAAC rivals, Fairfield and Siena. Bodes well for the MAAC Championships as Fairfield was voted #1 by the Conference Coach's ( St. Peter's was voted 2nd ). Weather was almost unplayable at 30 degrees with snow flurries!. Csn't say enough about Brian Grubbs. Turned the front 9 in 3 under par...by far the best 9 holes in the Tournament. Brian double bogied his final hole to shoot 1 over par 72. Great performance against major Teams and players.
We still have a lot of work to do but this weekends performance was encouraging. Could have been better but in order to record a good team score, all players need to perform. Think that we are very, very close. Next week @ Lafayette should be another "tell" as several MAAC Teams are entered.

As a newcomer to game, I know what you meant by "every shot counts"! The missed short putt counts as much as long drives and chip shots. I will probably mess up this golf adage but here goes.................."you drive for show and putt for dough" I struggle at both ends!

Thanks guys. Don't want to blow up one Tournament out of proportion since our overall goal is to repeat as MAAC Champions. There are four or even five Teams that IMO have a chance. The Teams that I am most worried about are Fairfield and Monmouth. We won the Championship last year by 4 shots over both but Fairfield was missing their stud player who was on sabbatical. This year he is back but it takes 5 players to win a Tournament and, I believe , my top 4 taken as a group ( our 5th man is still TBD ) are the best in the Conference. Just have to prove it.
This coming weekend we play @ Lafayette with several more MAAC Teams in the field ( not Fairfield). We meet again the following week @ the UConn event. In response to Wiskeyjack61's point every shot is so important. Don't want the boys to be overally anal about every shot but we do emphasize focus...not an easy thing to do for 18 holes.
Bottom line is that I'm proud of my players. They are not only good but represent St. Peter's well. Whatever happens they have been working hard...our indoor racket ball net room, cardio in the gym and some weights all thru February. Then Spring Training in Fla. funded entirely by the parents and others. No matter what happens the effort has been there.

OT, no more finishing behind Colgate...I lose sibling bragging rights! Best of luck this weekend! Peacock Invitational is close to me, maybe I can catch some live action this year.

youngalum...I'll relay the message. Colgate does have a very good team. Sort of a surprise today at the Villanova Tournament ( Day 1) with Rider finishing ahead of Monmouth, Manhattan and Canisius. Let's see if it holds up tomorrow. I chose the Towson Tournament as it had a stronger field. Winner was Arkansas #36 in the nation.
Everyone invited to the Peacock Invitational, Tuesday April 15th @ Neshanic Valley, NJ. Begins @ 10:00AM and will last all day. We go about noon, paired with Hofstra and St. John's.

Team is really playing some excellent golf right now. Saw that Brian Grubbs was named MAAC Player of the Week recently.

Didn't someone quote Jerry West as saying the most important factor in winning at the college level is coaching. I guess that's true...nice win OT.

Just got back and typing this as the NCAA is underway. First, thanks to all our friends and supporters. Myself and the team really appreciate that. Some comments:
1) Did more on course "coaching" than I have done since the MAAC Championships. 'Lest anyone think that it was coaching that won...it was not! All I did was let each player know where we stood and what they had to do. Especially the last three holes. THEY performed and I had nothing to do with it.. Quite proud of how they performed under pressure.
2) Interesting day as Eric Edmunds fought back from two over to finish two under and birding the last hole. Dominic Diaz, my best putter, started two under and even with that missed three under birdie putts under ten feet. Then he 4 putted the 16th hole but showed what he was made of by bouncing back and birding #17. Nick Dilio, best swing on the team, fought a slight fever and cold but posted two great rounds. All this considering I had to make him miss the practice round the day before. And what can I say about Brian Grubbs. If there is a better player in the MAAC than Brian or Eric, I want to see that player. Some very good players on Monmouth and Fairfield but Brian, Eric and Nick and Dom can play with anyone.
3) Now for my worries. Still looking for a 5th man contribution. My current 5th man is perhaps the most popular guy on the team and a very good golfer in his own right. But I need him to contribute. Again, in college golf you play 5 men and count the 4 best scores. My top four will need some help when they are having a bad day. So far it hasn't happened. We will need that if we are going to repeat as MAAC Champions. My current 5th man is close (on the cusp) but we need his contribution in order to compete. My main concern.
4) Finally, no matter happens in the next three weeks St. Peter's has sent notice that we are not only very good but have performed under pressure. Off to the UConn Tournament this coming weekend. After that it's our own Peacock Invitational ( April 14th) featuring a 12 Team Field including St. John's.
Thanks again!
