Manhattan College announced today Steve Masiello will be reinstated as head coach after he completes his degree from Kentucky. He has been placed on unpaid leave while he finishes up his degree and one of his assistants will run the team until he completes it.

From a selfish, competitive standpoint, that is too bad.
I think Masiello is a good coach and with Pankey and the shooter and Williams coming back, the Jaspers will be a tough out by March.
He is supposed to finish a few courses during the summer and be good to go by August. So, he was only a few courses away....but I am sure the academic purists will mount their soapboxes, with their panties in a collective bunch.
Silly misrepresentation cost him probably north of $3 million. OUCH!

I agree. I predicted this would be the result when speaking to Cindy about it post season. They weren't going to let him go over this choosing to let him finish his degree,do some public contrition for his transgression and move on from here.
I also agree ,i think he's an excellent coach and they will be a tough out next year as you mention above. His teams really get out and defend. As to the academic purists etc. the school probably assured itself that he may need a few years now before he repairs his reputation enough to leave for big money somewhere else again.

I wonder what would have happened had a history professor misrepresented his credentials in securing a faculty position at Manhattan. Disgraceful...shame on MC. I look forward taunting that dirtbag in JC next season. SPCfan, you and Vince Lombardi were right...winning is the only thing.Glad though that he lost the big bucks. Even the timing on the announcement stinks to high heaven. Manhattan buries the story in the glow of the NCAA championship game, similar to a Friday night news dump when news is bad out of the White House. Finally you don't overlook 10 credits...that's almost a semester...what was he doing for those 5 years ?

He was probably partying with the co eds and sampling the best of Kentucky's favorite whiskey and mine b/t/w Pappy van Winkle bourbon. Maybe he took a semester off to enjoy the blue grass and go to the Derby.
You're right about the timing of the announcement, good move by their PR people burying it on the day of the NCAA final when it's barely a blip even in New York media. Will be interesting to see how he does next year when all the players are his own recruits.
Bottom line as i said previously he does his contrition, finishes his degree ,shows some humility and MC looks like a good Christian school giving those who have transgressed another chance.Good defense lawyer argument, don't you agree Cindy.

Just heard Charles Barkley congratulate Manhattan College on giving coach Masiello another chance on post game show on TruTV. MC will wind up getting a lot of good pub out of this in the end for showing compassion.

Gotta love the spin by the Manhattan administration in justifying retention of another low life ........finding that, after exhaustive examination, he "did not intentionally misrepresent himself". Must have forgotten he did not graduate. Of course, who really cares. Just a bump in the road where ultimately only W/L's will matter.

You know, sometimes you say and repeat the lie so often, you begin to believe it yourself.. Not speaking from personal experience of course....

And when Manhattan goes 25-5 and a big conference school comes calling next year, Steve will take the job. Hey any of us would, given the bump in pay---just don't cry at the presser filled with platitudes. Simply say it's a whore's game and I'm some of the "talent."

I would love to see the course he takes to get his degree, and from where,Phoenix U or maybe the P T Barnum Clown College. I wonder whether he wears his cap and gown to the first game.

John Galt's quote, if accurate, from the Manhattan Administration concerns me....that " he (Masiello) did not intentionally misrepresent himself". Are you kidding me!! Manhattan, do what you have to do but please don't assume you are talking to idiots.
PS As a Coach, I know , and so do 90% of all Coaches that coaching is 80% about recruiting. If you have the players, you will win or, at the very least, compete at the top of your conference. That other 20% is important and separates some Coaches from others but there are no absolute geniuses out there.

Here you go O/T. From Zag's blog.
"After an extensive review of the situation and extenuating circumstances, we determined that Mr. Masiello executed poor judgment but did not intentionally misrepresent himself in applying to the College,” said Brennan O’Donnell, president of Manhattan College.
Having left Manhattan you won't be asked to defend this Administration. Must be great having a coach who is not only a blatant liar but has no interest in being there.
